I buy mean every 4 weeks. I get the meat, bag it all up and freeze it.
My mother in law insists that i should get fresh meat every couple of weeks. Isnt it the same thing? Wether i get the meat every 2 weeks or 4 weeks, its going to be frozen and thawed and then cooked?
As per to my other thread about lemon chicken going wrong, she said the chicken pieces were soft after cooking because the breasts were sitting in the freezr for a long time. Is that true?
I thought that whatever you put in the freezer still remains fresh when you cook - just have to use it within a month!

i will tell u what... all these typical MIL have lived in PK where u can get fresh this fresh that just outside ur door... i mean shops are nearby so ppl always go for fresh.. have to agree though, that fresh watever, tastes much much better than frozen no doubt abt it! i myself buy frozen chicken and meat... u ask isnt it the same thing, even if we buy fresh we will have to put in freezer anyway, and i said NO... its not the same. cus the meat/chick u get in markets look at their production date... its more than 4-5 months atleast and expire by another 5-6 months! as compared to the fresh meat which u buy and put in freezer.. atleast its taste will b better than the ones u buy... i hate this thing abt paki ppl.. esp when they try to impose it on me.... so irritating.
I know that fresh produce/poultry and meat tastes way better than frozen stuff but its jst time consuming. Weekly shopping and meat shopping is going to consume so much of my time on the weekends. Grrr....
All the desies I know , even with MILs buy meat once a month, whole goat is one dollar per pound cheaper too.
Mall is right on , about the meat being available fresh in Pakistan, you should explain to your MIL how even your butcher gets meat which is frozen . In US I am guessing I am not sure that even the slaughter houses by law cannot ship unfrozen meat to the stores.
They have to freeze it before shipping it to the local stores for retails sale purposes.
We buy fresh from a bigger city near us when we visit so we buy every 2-3 months and then bag it and freeze it athome. I think our dishes taste fine regardless of the meat being frozen for 2-3 months.
Well this is what i do - i buy a whole months supply and freeze it. Sometimes, hubby gets upset stomach after having dinner and then he concludes that maybe it was the meat which i disagree to. There is nothing wrong with the meat. Alhumdullilah, where i get the meat, is the most paak place, so clean and i know the butchers.
AAARGHH - mil just needed another excuse to have a go at me!!!
ok when buying the goat do u guys smell the goat. it's so starnge and irritating. i cant eat goat meat. all i bring is beef stew and beef keema. i tried bringing goat meat but it smelled so much that i threw it away. it was fresh and halal.i want to try the goat but due 2 the smell i am reluctant.it's not the shop issue. just the smell of goat.
i buy also 2 months supply.
That is strange. Here in the UK in some parts there are MANY MANY halal meat shops, which sell FRESHLY slaughtered meat. I happen to live near one so we can buy it once a week and cook on the day some, and freeze the rest for the rest of the week. Sometimes tho if we buy loads, we don't consume the frozen stuff until like a month or even more later, and there's hardly any difference between them.
As someone mentioned earlier, SMELL the meat or chicken first, and also look at the colouring to ensure its fresh.
Every two weeks actually, but we only get very small quantities, like 1 lb or 1 whole chicken, cz we dont have a car or anything so carrying too much is a problem, he doesnt like goat or beef so i cook chicken once a week and rest is veggies....last weeknd we got two pounds of keema and boneless chicken and a whole chicken...for $10! how much does it usually cost elsewhere?
When I buy I make sure that goat weight is between 16-17lb. Big goats have very bad smell. We don't like the smell of the goat too. but make sure u get baby goat doesn't have smell at all. Red meat is not good healthwise, so I only get keema/ veel boti for kababs etc. white meat chicken/fish is good. I always tell the grocery shop owner if i get smelly goat i will return it :P so that way he give me good stuff :) last week i bought whole baby goat for $80, whole chicken is $6. qeema 2 lb cost me $10, qeema 2lb $10.
So do americans actually eat GOAT? We don't have goat available easily here. The red meat is usually lamb (young sheep) or mutton, which is like a 3 year old SHEEP.Beef is also available, but mutton / lamb is preferred.

What do u mean by "AMERICAN" eat gooat. Duniya mein har kisam kai janwar miltay hain.
^ i didnt mean to offend, i find it strange bcos i would have thought that goat wouldnt b easily available in usa either, bcos the majority of ppl would go for the usual beef / lamb type animals.
I know goat is a common food animal in other countries, but didnt think so in states.
