Over on this side of the pond 15% is standard and some now talk about 20% being the norm. Paying less than 15% makes you look kanjoos here.

I tipped 15% for crappy service in London - it was only later I discovered that UK is less of a tipping culture and I should have held on to my monies.

I’ve been twice! And immigration didn’t just let me in - they practically begged me to honour them with my presence :snooty:

No tip culture in France, but in Canada I add 10% to 15% when I remember.

It’s actually a bit overwhelming with all of the tips. Yes, I know its just a few dollars, but it adds up:

  • bartender - even for the diet coke or lemonade, it’s like a dollar a drink.
  • coatcheck person - $1 to 2 (depending on whether I have a loonie or twoonie)
  • room service - $3-5 for meals delivered to the room
  • pizza delivery guy - $3-5
  • cab driver - $5 on a cash fare - 10-15% on a credit fare

Who don’t I tip? The doorman at the hotel and I alwys decline bellhop services - I can carry my own suitcases up, thank you very much!

Who gets the 15-20%? That’s for restaurant meals or personal services (i.e. masseuse, hairstylist).

The other day I gave $2 tip on $11 bill just to cut a side bang, which altogether took less than 5 minutes. She didn’t even cut it the way I told her to. :mad:
