i used to get 5 rs daily up to grade 5, in pakistan daily some times 10 rs, back in the late 90s. After moved to canada never got pocket money, parens bought us what we needed.

i remember starting with

CHAAR - AANEY

then lately it was increased to

1 RUPIA

and when i was in my 8/9th grade it was increased to 5Rs :eek: … After eating lunch, I still used to save a Rupee or two from those. Soda was used to be Rs2 per bottle then …good old days .. not far ..just late 80s

oh and as far as our kids are concerned (7 and 3.5 yo), they have not started getting pocket money so to speak. Whatever money they get, they deposit it in their saving box. Our boy do get some money for snacks when he goes out on school trips (museum, parks etc). Dollar or two that he can put in vending machine and enjoy choclate or juice whenever he feels like.

We just think its too early for them to get into this devil cycle of money.

**the rule of the thumb is 5 dollars per week plus 1 dollar for each year of his age so a 12 year should get 17 dollars a week...thats pretty decent...whatever money he makes thru odd jobs he must be able to keep and required to deposit in a savings box :) that will teach him/her how to save :)

...too much pocket money spoils a kid and i'm a living proof of that. :(**

I started giving Noor $5/week when she turned 5 years old.
Out of this money she is expected to contribute 50 cents to the donation jar that she then must remember to take to the mosque for the sadqa/donation box.

Most times she forgets to even ask for the allowance and I end up setting it aside to put in her account.

I have started asking her to pay for items when she wants to buy them. Not necessarily out of her own money just yet but just handling the transaction at the cashier by herself.

muzna...the girls 5 for gods sake....wow...thats tough.

well i got 1 pound here and there when i was a kid( im 23 now so when i was around 10 to 13)

THEN I got 2 pounds......

however..my sis and bro who are younger get a whole lot moree -NOT FAIR...

Don’t have kids yet but this is what my parents gave me in the 90s

Started with 1 dirham every day from nursery to 3th grade.
2 dirhams a day from 4th-5th
3 dirhams a day from 6th-8th
Sometimes my dad would give me & brother extra 1-2 dirhams in the evening as well.

9th-10th grade 15 rupees for every day lunch at school & Rupees 500-700 extra per month.

No pocket money at all. we used to but i didn't like the way they were growing love for money n then older kids were trying to buy stuff from their money at our backs with out consulting us. So new rule is whatever money u get from relatives will come to us only n watever u wat ask for it. if its imp we'll buy it if not we'll skip it.

I and my siblings never got pocket money, whenever we wanted/needed to buy something, our parents always gave us the money anyway and we were fine with that.

Btw, £20 for a 10 year old? Wow! Is that in a week? Or month?

I don't get any allowance. If I'm going out somewhere my parents will give me 20 bucks and I keep the change.

we got allowance very briefly- i think 10 dirhams a week or something way back when. but it didn't last for very long. whatever we wanted our parents bought us, so having our own spending money didn't have much charm back then.
