Re: how much of a tip do you give?
on side note, i HATE restaurants that add gratuity onto bill because of 'my convenience'. Thanks but no thanks.

Re: how much of a tip do you give?
I don't believe in tips.
Re: how much of a tip do you give?
zindagi main sirf ek daffa tip di thi woh bhi 10 ya 20 rupay ki…:hinna:
Re: how much of a tip do you give?
It used to be 10% when I was in college and I usually gave that if service was ok, more if service was good and if service was bad. To make a point I would give a penny or leave a penny.
Nowadays in the Gulf, they have gratuity added to all the places as service charge especially in chain restaurants like Chilis, Applebees and so on, so I refuse to tip over there plus in Gulf the owners keep the tip if paid by card. So I used to leave cash for our server.
I just found out that tips have also increased so from now on will be giving 15% when going out.
BTW do you guys tip in desi restaurants for dinner, what about if you go for a buffet, do you tip?
Re: how much of a tip do you give?
It really depends on the quality of the service and how much I'm already paying for the food/service.
Re: how much of a tip do you give?
I give what is appropriate for the country and restaurant. Its all relative.

Actually that's a very good point. I'm never sure what the norms in other countries are - is 15-20% too much or too little in Europe, Middle East and South Asia?
Re: how much of a tip do you give?
20% is way too much in South Asia. 5 to 10% depending on the restaurant.
20% is moderate in the Middle East. 15% max in my opinion.
20% is crazy in Europe considering how much the Euro is worth. A meal can be 20 euros easily per person. Giving 20% of that is not feasible even if the waitress was naked and doing cartwheels.
Re: how much of a tip do you give?
^ See, I always fall back on the 15% rule as a default.
I was in London and got crappy service at a restaurant, but I STILL gave a 15% tip. I was mad at myself but felt like I'd be cheaping out if I gave anything less.
Re: how much of a tip do you give?
With the UK pound as it is who the hell gives a tip in London. Its like giving someone a tip in Greece. Waste of money!
Re: how much of a tip do you give?
^ Well what did I know! I just applied the North American tipping rules in Europe as well. We did the same thing in Paris (and wow those Parisians are rude).
Re: how much of a tip do you give?
15% min. for reasonably good service. around 20% for good service.
In Europe, this is apparently considered too much though... found out after I had tipped too much at a restaurant and my colleagues laughed at me.
Re: how much of a tip do you give?
15% is the standard tipping amount in North America. That being said, I refuse to accept 20% as the new 15% - that's too much as a base tip. 20% or more if the service merits it, but I refuse to give more than 15% for just okay service.
Thank you! I'm surprised at the amount of people that give 20%. I give 15%. You guys must be receiving some really nice service.
Re: how much of a tip do you give?
Receiving excellent service is always nice, but honestly I don't care that much about the service unless the person waiting on me is being rude (then I would have a problem). It's probably one of the hardest working jobs with the least amont of pay so if a good tip can help make someone's day then that's what I choose to do.
Re: how much of a tip do you give?
okay nevermind I kind of (maybe) understand where people are coming from. In California, unless they changed it, all servers are paid mininum wage no matter what (without tipping)...........so I guess its a bit different
Re: how much of a tip do you give?
^ What CM said abt each country being different. I get a kick out of giving more in smaller places when I visit back home or in ethnic places since most times those waiters/waitresses get shortchanged. Just the look on their face is worth it.
And always leave something for the ladies who clean your hotel room, always. Back breaking work with little pay.
Re: how much of a tip do you give?
Thank you with a bigggg smile :D
Re: how much of a tip do you give?
I tip way more in Pakistan, cause usually the waiters get gypped on tips from the locals.
Re: how much of a tip do you give?
umm i don't think us brits are big on tipping. i hardly ever tip.

Agreed which is why I consider 15% to be a way of compensating the wait/service staff for their work. Anything above 15% is my way of showing specific appreciation for the courteous, prompt and pleasant service I received.
