So I recently joined a gym and have been spending about 2 hours there everyday… about 45 mins on treadmill, 10-15 mins in the sauna, and the other hour I usually just use the ab cruncher, epilator, step machine, and leg exercisers… 4 pecs each… how many mins should a person spend on each exercise? I feel like 2 hours isnt enough.. and another thing… it takes me forever to sweat… I could be in the worst pain imaginable… but it takes me a long time to sweat… and most other people are sweating from their face/head whatever and mine is hardly visible… why is that? What am I doing wrong? And is it better to exercise in the morning or at night? Or does it not matter?
Oh and another thing, how many calories should you be burning in your total workout? I heard you’re supposed to burn more calories than you consume or something like that… so basically I have to burn more than 2000 calories?
what? m no expert but isnt 45 mins @ the treadmill too much!?! i certainly think it is...also, 2 hours is ofcourse also too much. An hour should be good esp if you are excercising 6 day a week.
As for sweating, some say those who sweat more means their body is burning more but some say its just a myth. As for the excercise timing i think its wateva suits you but doin in the morning would be better since it will give your day and your body a kick start. :)
Good luck and i hope somebody here can correct us and let us know about the dos and donts of excercise.
p.s btw how do you manage 45mins on treadmil...even 15mins is so hard for me not only cuz its tough but i find it boring too :( i rather take a long walk.
I personally think that an hour of exercise is more than enough. I think the intensity of the exercise is more important than how long you spend doing it. One of the reason that you may not sweat is because the exercise aren’t intensive enough, the other is simply because some people sweat more than others. So long as your training is intensive I wouldn’t bother too much about sweating. I personally jog on the threadmill for about 10 minutes, as part of the warm up or cooling down, and as far as crunches are concerned I do them on an incline bench and usually do two sets of the maximum that I can do unless I am targetting that area in which case I may do more sets.
I usually go to the gym in the evening but I thinki going in the morning is better because you can push your body that much more in the morning.
If you eat 2000 calories then you don’t need to burn them all during exercise. Remember that you will be burning calories off throughtout the day.
Sabriya, 45 minz on the treadmil is great.
I do suggest however that you include stretching before and after using it and warming up and cooling down. Doing so is an integral part of your workout and must be included. I didnt see any mention of this in your post.
As far as spending 1 hr on the machines.... It's a personal choice how many hrs you want to spend at the gym. Just be sure you are not working out the same muscles everyday. Your muscles need a break to recover and overworking them can cause more harm then good. Once again, be sure to stretch out each muscle before and after working them out. You are more suseptible to injury if you dont.
The amount of time you want to spend on each machine depends upon what you are trying to achieve. I personally use heavy weights, and do less reps and about 3 sets. But once again...that's just me. You may find your own way of doing things.
If you think that 2 hrs isnt enough then perhaps you are not making it challenging enough for you because 2 hrs is more then enough time to get a good workout. You should be able to feel your muscles burn..if not then I would increase the weights you are using.
workout morning, noon, or night....just do it whenever it fits into your schedule and be consistent about it.
Lastly, the amount of calories you should burn depends on what you are trying to achieve.
i used to do 60 minutes of cardio 4 times a week, as well as light lifting and muscle training but eventually stopped...now i just can't find the time/energy to do that again. =//
oh yea forgot to mention that as well. the amount of sweat depends on ones's sweat glands...some have sweat that drips others just have a little. Doesnt mean that you are not getting a good workout.
Although, I heard that the more you sweat the more calories you burn. Not sure if that is just another myth or a fact.
Ok thanks alot for all the replies! On the treadmill I alternate every 20 mins between 1 and 2 incline and vary the speed from time to time... starting from 3.5 and going to 4.5 It does feel like alot at times, but Im used to running and I just love the feeling. As for the weights... when I do leg curls and exercises for the inner and outer thighs, Im doing 30 lbs... Im guessing thats probably too little.
I dunno why I always thought working out at night is best... I just thought you're burning off everything you ate in the day lol and probably wont eat afterwards so you're making the most of your workout..
Between 3.5 and 4.5 seems like a slow walk. You don't need to do it for 45 minutes. A shorter duration at a higher speed would have the same effect. After a couple of minutes between 3.5 and 4.5 you should be doing at least 6.5+. After a couple of minutes warm up I usually move to anywhere between 9-13 depending on my mood.
**arshad…**i would think it depends on the kind of treadmill one is using..perhaps the speeds vary? also it would depend on the height of the person. A person with long legs would be able to go faster and then a person with short legs and they would go at different speeds…no?
**Sabriya…**when i jog on the treadmill i go b/w 5-6. which is probably the fastest I ever plan on going. 4.5 is a brisk power walk for me. I actually alternate days…one day I power walk and other days jog because jogging everyday isnt good for your joints. Anyway IMO 4.5 is decent speed for us women unless you plan on being a sprinter
Just go with your level of comfort and not what others are doing.
I agree…but she included 15 minz sauna in there as well and if she is including “proper” stretches then its not so bad.
So I recently joined a gym and have been spending about 2 hours there everyday... about 45 mins on treadmill, 10-15 mins in the sauna, and the other hour I usually just use the ab cruncher, epilator, step machine, and leg exercisers... 4 pecs each... how many mins should a person spend on each exercise? You are one hard working girl. no question about that.
The gym close my house is a community center too. So they made sauna next to pool and both men and women could go there.
lol . being there is Very strange.
How much exercise you need mainly depends on three things, (1) what are you exercising for (2) your physiology (3) your age.
What you need to ask yourself is why are you exercising, to lose some weight, to look better, to run in a race, for your old age etc?
You can change other things but your physiology is innate. Some people can eat 10x than you and still be skinny without exercising. You might think they are lucky but actually they are the ones who have a problem. So know yourself, your appetite, your metabolism etc.
Age matters because if a forty year old suddenly start to exercise like a professional athlete, he will wear himself out.
OMG does the treadmill even go as high as 13?? The highest for me is 4.0 and yea 4.5 is very fast and I can’t imagine going as high as 9 or 13(eek), it’s too intense for me
