Any hypothetical examples? I’m slightly confused but all I know that it is a big margin.
Well let's see:
- - Pakistan lost to England by 48 runs today
- - Netherlands won against England on the last ball
Based on those two facts alone, Pakistan will have to defeat Netherlands by 49-50 runs which I dare suggest is impossible in a 20-over game esp. given the skills and mental strength of the current Pakistani team
Re: How much does Pakistan have to win by?
^ No, it is not by 49/50 runs BUT 25.5 = 26 runs.
Pakistan’s net run rate is -2.4
Netherlands’ is +0.050
We need to beat them by around 26 runs. That’s for sure.
(-48 + x)/2 > (1 - x)/2
=> 2x > 49
=> x > 25.5
any victory margin of equal to or greater than 26 runs will see pakistan through.
Bat first: Pak have to win by 26 runs or more
Bowl first:
If Netherlands score 120, Pak need to score it in 16.2 overs
If Netherlands score 130, Pak need to score it in 16.4 overs
If Netherlands score 140, Pak need to score it in 17 overs.
If Netherlands score 150, Pak need to score it in 17.1 overs.
If Netherlands score 160, Pak need to score it in 17.2 overs.

Ahh thank you, it is much clearer now. Yes, I do agree...the task ahead is practically impossible.
That is if Netherlands bat first.
If we bat first we have to win by a margin of 49-50 runs
Re: How much does Pakistan have to win by?
^ the task ahead is not impossible, check those calculations out. Remember its Netherlands, lets not think too negative , Netherlands ki team ab itni bhi khaas nahi, its not every day you can be so lucky like they were.
I think its the difference of the score between what netherland made yesterday and what pakistan made today which is 26. Pakistan has to win by 26 runs.

don't think it is as simple as that
What about the extra 23 runs (162 v Scotland, 185 against Pak) that England scored against Pakistan today?
Net run rate = your run rate minus run rate against you
May be they should hire the service of the sports psychologists again.

Re: How much does Pakistan have to win by?
To be honest, Netherlands is one amateurish side. Their win against the English is more of a commentary on the T20 format and the standard of England's fielding on that day than the quality of the Netherland's team.
Except for a few like Nannes (bowler) and ten Doeschate (batsman), all the other guys reminded me of my college team in their ugly and awkward style batting and ordinary bowling.
On cricinfo, they are saying that pak has to win by 60+ runs. Can someone please confirm? Having said that, after today's "performance", pak doesn't quite deserve to go to next round.
Re: How much does Pakistan have to win by?
^^ And my feeling is that they probably won't ! :(
Todays performance was a nightmare and to be honest....i guess pak team will give us another nightmare on tuesday :(
Re: How much does Pakistan have to win by?
According to cricinfo, Pakistan have to beat Netherlands by at least 60 runs. I'm not holding my breath.
AIR BABA ONE
your first post was correct. We need to beat Netherleands by about 25 runs, not 60. This how it works: we only need our net run rate to be better than Netherlands to get the second position in the group (and hence qualify for the next round). A win against Netherlands will drop their run rate and at the same time increase Pakistan’s run rate. Hence the two run rates meet half way: Netherlands’ drops by about half the difference and Pakistan’s increases by about half. The result is that a win by 25 runs will Pakistan give enough gain to eke past Netherlands.
So good news. Winning by 25 runs is certainly a lot easier than by 50 or 60 runs. I don’t think Pakistan’s hopes are extinguished yet. ![]()

If that happens, then ICC has learnt nothing from the fiasco of 2007 World Cup. Why decide the fate on the basis of two games only? One surprise result, and or a one rained out game could change the whole complexion of the tournament. Pakistan are traditional slow starters, and they take time to gather steam. This does not mean that they're a worse team than Netherlands, which has a real chance of going to the next round in place of Pakistan.

Net run rate = your run rate minus run rate against you
In order to qualify you have to overcome netherlands run rate and not Englands. England is virtually assured of their super 8 place.
