marry a working woman or a rich widow and then you won't have to worry about this stuff.

Depends on where you're residing as rent could be a sizeable portion of your income. I do remember having such discussions with friends a few years back, and basically we came up with a figure of $3500/month after taxes.
1) Rent: $1000
2) Utilities + Phone, TV and Internet Bills: $350
3) Two cell phones: $100
4) Car payment: $400
5) Fuel + Insurance: $500
6) Grocery: $500
so that's $2700- $2800 for basics and then for the wife you'll need another $700 month
7) Dining out/Entertainment: $350
8) Buying clothes/accessories + any extras: $350
A lot of it depends upon your lifestyle though. I know people who manage it in under $2000/month somehow, and then there are others for whom tens of thousands of dollars per month is not enough.

It depends on your wife as well, if she's willing to do *guzara *with whatever amount you're earning with you then there should be no problem. I'm sure she'd adjust.
