So what is the ‘correct’ reply to such a question posed by a girl (wife, gf, etc.)?
One of the few I tried was,“Sweetheart, I love you as much as you love me”. Needless to say, it wasn’t taken well.

in general terms this answer is less of a 'tell me' and more of a 'show me'.
And if she still isn't happy, then finding the answer is the least of your problems. Just dump the insecure person asap.

But seriously, I want to know what are you expecting as a reply?. Is there some 'correct' answer that the male species seem to miss every frikkin time. Is the question time-dependent, meaning are you asking how much we love you at that particular instance? Why is this question usually asked after a fight?

well, I don't think I would ever ask anyone this question because you can't quantify such emotions. ( why and how much...nah. you love eachother and thats the only reason you want to be together)I am quiet an extremist and love and hate with passion, so I won't obviously believe him if I get such a response 'cuz somehow I would like to live under the illusion that my love superscedes his love. :D

Minervee - That's very wise. I don't think us men are programmed to love from the heart. Our love is more of a companionship love. It's not easy to express. So, it's better if women stop asking men this stupid question.

fg if you're in a relationship , obviously you'll be aware of what the woman expects - so yeah you better have an answer to her question else the relationship was a mistake to start with. :o

Look away, then, turn back, gather her into your arms. Tell her that you love her more than is physically possible. That sometimes your love threatens to rip you apart into tiny pieces, and each of those pieces love her more than a fish loves water, or an ass loves grass.
