There are religious differences of course, but culturally we're pretty much the same. Heck even our doctors are going on strikes simultaneously! :D
I am not blaming Indians for not knowing much about Pakistan. I'm sure Pakistanis don't know much about other South Asian countries either, at least I don't.
As for stereotypes, Bollywood sorta enforces them... like McPendo mentioned the topi and scarf thing... women are usually shown wearing gharara lol ... then the nikah scene that Reha mentioned... and the adaab gesture ... who does that?
I pity those who expect bollywood to show a realistic representation of Muslims, as if the industry sets the benchmarks on realistic portrayals with those songs and dances.
To be fair to Hollywood I don't think any community within India is portrayed correctly. So understandable why you guys think boly does not portray Pakistanis correctly.
What is garara.
And yes I though most Muslims say adaab. Like in adaab arz hai? Something to do with shayari?

Well southie what Reha and BBQ said is true. The stereotypical portrayal of Pakistan simply tells their Pakistani audience that bollywood industry is not educated in general. Nobody goes around saying adab. Nobody in my family says it and i am sure most of Pakistanis. Last year i invited one of the fella to my brother's wedding. He had just come from India. He was expecting..my brother to be those sehra where flower hangs front of the face..everyone sayin adaab and all. I was like yo..ya have been mis-informed and mis-understood..and i am sure to an extent this kind of Muslim weddings happens in India but not in Pakistani weddings.
I grew up during the days of pre-internet in India. Most of the information that I had was from magazines and the occasional TV show about Pakistan. Ok Bollywood too, but I hardly remember any movie wherein we had characters from Pakistan.
My impression was that of a country where everybody had a long beard and carried AK47s. Believe I longed to be a Paksitani those days.
I personally never knew anything about Pakistan ( apart from the govt affairs and cricket), before I joined here ofcourse.
I've never seeked out any knowledge of Pakistan simply because we were brought up to hate Pakistan , so there was no mystery no aww element, not a superior country ( like US or UK ) that you would like to seek further knowledge. It was frowned upon.
The only time I remember in school some one even mentioning Pakistan was my BFF asking me to watch pak tv dramas that used to come on tape and I had reacted negatively.
And its not like America whose culture is exported through films and TV and you would want to know more. And since in India pak channels are not shown except Masala TV I think.
Apart from Indian muslims and Punjabis ( non muslims) and Bollywood producers who still connect to Pakistan on some level or the other, don't think others , especially the Indian living in India know much aside from what is in the newspaper. They are pretty much neutral.
Indians outside India might have more knowledge coz more chances that they live among Pakistanis.
But after joining here, I know almost everything!!!
well most indians don't even know much about most other parts of india other than their own cultural area, forget pakistan.
as for cultural similarities, there may be plenty between north india and the parts of pakistan to the east of the indus (somehow i doubt even pakistanis know much about the baloch and pakhtoons or even the sindhis :P ), but there are big differences from the two-three generations spent as separate nations. the biggest one i feel is the level of religiosity.

I am Indian , I went to Pakistan a couple of time . I didn't see any difference between ind & pak except the language and the number of masjids in pakistan., yeah in pak there are larger number of masjids.
