I have always wondered how MQM collects bhatta in a city as big as Karachi, it has to be a really organized operation. I found this article thta gives little insight on how bigger scale is bhatta collected in Karachi.

I know a few automotive part business ship owners on Mcleans road (near saddar I believe). Though the worst times were in the 90s, when they would get MQM ppl with AK47s shouting 'oye @#$@#$ apni dukaney band karo' at gunpoint for calls to strikes. They have always had to pay bhatta though, even now. Right now they take bhatta from the shops in the form of 'parking fee'. Now technically the parking is free, and if someone refuses to pay, the lower unimportant MQM ppl assigned for this fee collection would either key your car, or put 'elfi' in the key holes, or other similar things. They also scratch or dent the cars even if you pay bhatta in order to identify the carowner as a 'good cushtomer'... In 2004, this parking fee bhatta was Rs. 500 per month.

and this bhatta collection...how much is this affecting the collection of state taxes/Province taxes and income taxes from all the small business owners??? a guy who owns a small bakery in Karachi, has to give some amount for Eidi, Fitrana, Zakaat, must also have to pay for other occasions like, Eid Milaad-ul nabi, Eid ul adha and other occasion where MQM can squeez money out of poor business community.
So after paying all these bhattas, how inclined are they going to be to pay taxes to state, to pay income taxes etc etc. So eventually it is costing the state a lot of money.

My cousin runs a private school and tech training center in Karachi, a few years ago he was paid a visit by MQM to ask for 'donations' he refused, they strong armed him. He is one of those principled type ppl but oblivious of the dangers around him, when they asked him he said no, when they insisted he told him yeh kya baanyways..they forcefully took him from his office and to some center of ops where he was tied up, later he saw the older brother of one of his students, and compalined to him about the treatment. This guy told him that he respects him and will do what he can to save him, but that there is n way they will let him go without money. In the end he was released with a warning to pay up within 2 days or face the consequences and noting that they were not making an example of him this time because of the sifarish of his student's brother.
These are the horrible revlations. How much your cousin paid the butta after their warnings?

I have heard some horrible stories too, one of my friend whose dad moved to karachi in 70's for business and was originally from Lahore. One day his dad was paid visit to by people from unit telling him that we know you have 2 sons, which school they both go to, what time they leave home and what time do they come back and which route they use, you pay us up or else....my friends dad was given few days and he moved outaa Karachi to lahore in those days....Later he moved backed to Karachi in late 90's. That friend has moved back to Pak after he finished his studies coz he wants to help his dad with business....two months after he moved back to pak, his car got jacked. he is still firm on staying in pak for business, but i wouldnt be surprise if he gets fedup and move to US.
Another guy i know whose family moved from Karachi to ISB after his family had gotten caught in cross fire between two MQM groups at their balcony and then eventually moved out as soon as they could
and thats just couple of people that i know...and these were lucky enough to get out of there, what about the ones who were/are not lucky and cant afford to move out...life is tough for them

Great time to bring this up. When mullas are ruining swat, destroying lahore and trying to get to karachi, there is no better time, to trash the only force standing up to them. The more you focus on how bad mqm is, the more you are helping mullas. You have to be a mulla, or a complete idiot to do so.

Seems like you have learned something from Musharraf, good for you. Playing "terrorists" card can get you that far, just like Musharraf, you can buy time, you can stay at top for sometime. Thats about it.

hey from what I know, One of the regional offices of PPP is in a building that belongs to my dad that they took over.
during BBs time we could nto go to Pakistan because of the threats against our family. including kidnap threats.
but we cant say oh lets ignore that because atleast they are not extremists, same can be said of MQM. their wrongs can not be ignored.
