Re: How many would want your son to live seperately?

THe majority of "old white people" in America do not wish to live with their kids: they also grew up in the American culture of independence and self-reliance. Many, many elderly in America do not wish to be a burden on anybody, want their independence and see it as a massive insult that they should be thought of as unable to take care of themselves. Taking away an old person's driver's license here is considered the single most emasculating and disempowering thing you can do to them, because it undermines their independence. That is what America is about.

Moreover, I have also seen old people in Pakistani joint families being made to feel a burden, a ball-and-chain, to their children, so the way Pakistani's take care of their old folks ain't always the pretty picture-perfect scenario you want to make it out to be.

In America, the way to respect your elders is to let them be their own persons, let them live the life they want and not interfere. Some oldies want to live with their kids, some do not. There is no assumption that they do, so as a Pakistani, do not assume that they are unhappy with their living situation just because Pakistani culture tells you they must be.

Re: How many would want your son to live seperately?

I have a 80 something year old couple in my neighborhood and they live alone so peacfully and happily. their kids visit them and they are always going to meet their grandkids and all that. BUt they would much rather live alone peacfully and not burden their kids or intrude in their privacy like any sensible parent would. FYI, people over 65 usually get medicare and elderly plan so they dont need to pay a dime for their prescription! my grandmother is 73 years old and she gets ALL her medication for free so i dont know who are these old folks you talk about workin in walmart to pay for their drugs.. and many older people WANT to work to keep themselves busy and active. SO MANY studies have shown that people who keep themselves busy and work hard usually remain much more healthier than old folks who sit around on couch all day ordering their kids to fetch water for them.. i know some 70+ people working because they like what they do and want to work till they die. it has nothing to do with being able to pay their bills, most old folks get social security, pension, free health coverage and enoguh money to be able to buy all the necessities.

How many of you in the States have had some old white person keep talking to you, just craving a conversation? Its so sad.

I dont know what world you live in but old white people are generally quite content. they just relax and enjoy their retirement. I see freakin 80 year olds going to bars and cruise and all thsoe things. no desi people are even close to being that active at that age. I see desi old folks sitting in their rooms and ordering their kids to get water for them, meanwhile 80+ white folks go to Florida to when it gets too cold here in NY. old desi folks are so dependent on their kids, they cant even go outside for a walk by themselves.. sad.

I'm thinking about getting two sets of t-shirts made. One will feature quotes from Team Edal. The other, quotes from Team MissTY. I shall wear them on alternate days.

Re: How many would want your son to live seperately?

There are so many gems to choose from.
MissTY’s ‘I see desi old folks sitting in their rooms…’ as a play off of ‘I see dead people..’
Edal’s ‘GET RID OF HER IMMEDIATELY, or GIVE A STERN WARNING!!!’ It sounds so John Cleese.

Edal, you’re not alone dude. You’re forgetting the silent gallery, remember?
