How many of you have seen that safety video or heard the instructions before every flight. Every time I hear the last statement, I know that although it sounds so logical but am not sure if I can do that. If my kid is gasping for air, I would not put an oxygen mask first on my mouth then on hers.
Has anyone else think like that when seen that video before the flight or is it just me?
I guess my main question is, do we use logic or emotions when it comes to the safety and security of our kids?
Re: how many of you would secure your life before saving your kids
the logic is that if you don't put your own mask on first and you pass out from lack of oxygen, your child has no hope. and if you put their mask on but they're too young to help you put yours on if they can even manage doing that, then again, they have no hope. so that's why its smarter and better to prepare yourself mentally for putting yours on first. it doesn't mean you are being selfish, it just means you are creating the best circumstances to allow you and your child to survive in that situation.
God forbid anyone should go through that situation firsthand, with or without their kids.
so anyway, i think being logical is better than emotional in any emergency.
Re: how many of you would secure your life before saving your kids
Yes my sis is a peds ICU nurse and she says that loss of conciousess occurs very quickly. Parents need to get the mask arranged, take a big breath of it and then give it to kids. If you give to kids first, you are taking a big chance of loss of consiousness yourself and then you both die.
Surely, it goes against intstinct to care first and foremost for your littles. But knowing what we know may give us the ability to do what we should do. INshallah.
Re: how many of you would secure your life before saving your kids
I understand the logic part you guys. It makes perfect sense. But the thing is, when you see your child in distress, its hard not to get emotional.
I mean be honest, how many of you took your child out of car seat in your laps just for 15 mins maybe while going long dist. Your kid was in that crampy child seat from last 4 hours, crying because of discomfort so you took him/her out. Logic? I dont think so.
Re: how many of you would secure your life before saving your kids
Although we should do whats told as unless you save yourself you cant save kids but I am not sure what will I do in such an emergency. Unless you are highly trained for a specific situation, you do what your instincts tells you to (most of the people will panic anyway) and my fatherly instincts will always tell me to save kids first.
Re: how many of you would secure your life before saving your kids
^ that is exactly what I think Decent.
I am not advocating my thoughts but just trying to understand if my feelings are normal or not. I just pray that none of us would ever be in that situation and our kids are always safe and healthy. Aameen
Re: how many of you would secure your life before saving your kids
Recently we traveled via Southwest and you know how these dudes are with their announcements...
So he says: "In the unlikely event of loss of cabin pressure, the oxygen masks will automatically be released. Pull a mask towards you, covering nose and mouth, adjust the headband and breathe normally. Wear your mask first, then help children and those who need your assistance. And if you have 2 kids, put the mask on the one with the greater potential!!!"
Re: how many of you would secure your life before saving your kids
what an idiot to make an announcement like that......I'm sure that the message could have been conveyed in a more politically correct way.
I agree with TLK....it is very hard not to be emotional.
Since I have travelled with Noor quite a bit I have had many opportunities to think about this.....and as Mama mentioned above, the only sensible answer I have been able to arrive at is to ensure that the child's mask is actually working by taking a big gulp of oxygen from that one.....putting it on the child and then putting mine on.
I don't think that I would be able to put mine on first. Simple as that.
Re: how many of you would secure your life before saving your kids
I've noticed lately that lots of flight attendants are bringing out a little humor in their announcements. I think its good as it keeps the passengers attentive and they actually listen to the announcements.
Re: how many of you would secure your life before saving your kids
LOL......hopefully I will get to enjoy a flight with a flight attendant that has good humour soon......all of the ones I have dealt with were miserable at best......at least since the cut backs.
Re: how many of you would secure your life before saving your kids
During my last flight, the guy announced ... and please bring your seat back to the most uncomfortable position, otherwise known as the the upright position.
Re: how many of you would secure your life before saving your kids
If anyone of you have traveled by Jet Blue, they have one of the most hilarious safety announcement specially
“if we are doing a crash landing on water, remember your life jackets are under your seat but hey tell me honestly, how many planes have made successful crash landings in water 0? 1? 2?”
