Did you knoww that if you speak urdu then you know about 70% of the arabic used in the Quran? ![]()
If thats true, then how many of you can actually understand parts of the Quran when reading or listening to it?
Re: how many of you can actually understand the Quraan?
Well, not really. We can for sure understand a lot of words but to make sense of the whole sentence, it's difficult. I feel very embarrased, that I can speak Urdu, read and write and arabic is the same script and we have so many arabic words in Urdu but I cannot speak Arabic or understand Arabic of Quran.
Nevertheless, I made it a point to read translation in Urdu and English and listen to Tafseer slowly and gradually so that whatever I read/recite, I know the meanings. That way it becomes easier to remember or learn by heart. I wish I had learnt Arabic as English in school right from first grade.
Re: how many of you can actually understand the Quraan?
I am trying hard these days. Dr. Israar's lectures are very simple and help me further use my big head in understanding Quran. Let me say, it has brought a big big change in me. I am not the same person as I used to be.... Alhamdulillah
Yes, urdu speaking is helpful to me but without the Arabic language, things do not convey the proper meaning to me. I need proper translation.....
Re: how many of you can actually understand the Quraan?
Urdu helps but not that much. Arabic is a very comprehensive language and one need to learn it to understand the Quran completely.
Urdu tafseers are good too. I mean if we can read arabic and then read urdu tafseer to understand, it solves the purposes.
I do understand a lot of words but need a lot of improvement.
Re: how many of you can actually understand the Quraan?
^ Yeah and I think the Tafseer of Molana Maudoodi is very simple and easy to use for urdu speaking people.....
Re: how many of you can actually understand the Quraan?
All of the words in arabic come down to their own 3 letter root, and if u have a look at the 3 letter root then its so much easier to see the meaning. wow..i wish i knew fluent urdu :( being raised up knowing arabic would have been better :) but whatever Allah wills.
Re: how many of you can actually understand the Quraan?
Incorrect. If you can READ Urdu then you can READ Quran but not necessarily understand it, there are few words that are common but Arabic grammar is very different from Urdu.
Re: how many of you can actually understand the Quraan?
Alot of the arabic words are the same as urdu's, so if you can catch the words out then you get the gist of whats being talked about. maybe not but my teacher convinced me so :)
Re: how many of you can actually understand the Quraan?
Depends what you mean by "understand"
Even the Arabs can't understand Quran. What I mean by saying this is that a normal Arabic language which is used to communicate with each other is not the exact same as Quran. The Quranic Arabic is of high level. Its like speaking normal Urdu and reading Allama Iqbal shairi. Even though both are same in Urdu but not every single person can understand the shairi.
Re: how many of you can actually understand the Quraan?
The beauty of the Quran is that it gets the message across in simple words. If it is too difficult to understand then the average person should not be allowed to read it, which is not the case. The only difference is that we cannot derive Ahkaam from the Quran, but this should not stop us from contemplating on the Quran.
To my understanding written arabic is the same everywhere, it’s spoken arabic that is different. But that’s pretty much how it is with every language cause people tend to speak using slang.
And if you know urdu, then understanding arabic becomes easier.
By the way, here’s a good site for learning arabic http://www.madinaharabic.com/

^ Thanks for the link.
Re: how many of you can actually understand the Quraan?
You are right.
All of his books including Tafseer are very easy to understand. He uses simple words.
Besides, his credibility is very high. His writings are being taught in Saudi Arabia as well.
Re: how many of you can actually understand the Quraan?
Its way easier if you already know udru, you have most of your vocab already, all you gotta learn is the grammar, which isnt that bad :)
Re: how many of you can actually understand the Quraan?
I read many tafseers and translations but everyone of them tried to translate it according to his or her views and school of thought.
The best is to learn Arabic and try to understand it by your self, if there are things that are not clear then look for many available Tafseers and translations to understand it.
Re: how many of you can actually understand the Quraan?
^ Bookworm thats very true. I have tried few tafseers but did not made any sence to me. I am going to learn Arabic so that even if when I am reciting Quran I would know the meaning and same goes for while praying. At least I will be able to concentrate.
Re: how many of you can actually understand the Quraan?
knowledge of arabic is not enough otherwise every arab would be an authority.
knowledge of the context of the surah, when it was revealed, what was going on etc is important too. The Surahs in Quran are organized in the magnitude of length i think and not the order that they were revealed in. but ther eis inf out there, makki or madani surahs and what was going on when teh surah was revealed. This is not to say that teh surahs were for that particular incident or time, but that to draw guidance from it, scholars have evaluated the circumstances..much of that is included in the tafseers. The accuracy of the circumstances is not always clear though and that creates confusion and thus different interpretations and schools of thought.
Re: how many of you can actually understand the Quraan?
not quite, the words may mean different things in urdu and arabic. There are also many words in arabic thata re not in urdu and vice versa.
but yeah it is easier for an urdu speaker to pick up arabic than lets say a chinese person (laziness not factored in)
Re: how many of you can actually understand the Quraan?
Actually some Arabic words are used in Urdu as well but with different meanings. So I have learnt Arabic to understand the Holy Qur'an. Yes I can understand the Arabic text.
