Re: how many of you can actually understand the Quraan?
Assalam,
The more frequent you are in reciting the Holy Word of Allah, the more you naturally begin to understand. Also, by comparing verses with the same word or words in them you come to understand what is truly being conveyed.
The Quran's arabic is a most elequent, elegant and poetic arabic which not only astonished and bewildered the Kufaar-i-Makkah, but whose speech and exuberance with wisdom resides to this day as the most beautiful language that has ever been revealed. Thus the Holy Qur'an is a hidden treasure chest whose jewels are understood only by those who are pure of heart and sincere in faith.
It's very context challenges the world to produce even an Ayat (verse) like that of the Qur'an's, yet this challenge has never been met or even equalled.
So, no matter what tongue is you mother tongue, the Holy Quran is difficult to understand, but is easy for those whose hearts are clean and perfumed with the fragrance of true righteousness, which is why the enemies of the Holy Prophet (saw) venerated and hailed the exqusiteness of speech and language used by the Holy Quran, and were baffled that an unlearned, unlettered one could produce such elegant speech by himslef.
This exquisiteness is a sign among signs of the truth and beauty of the Holy Qur'an.
I myself have memorized a large portion of the Holy Quran and have studied the various books on Arabic lexicon and dialogue, especially the meanings which are set forth by the Holy Prophet (saw) himself, and so naturally I understand a large portion of what I read, and it is true that Urdu speaking people have the ability to understand some of the Quran, but there are words in Urdu which are the same in Arabic and hold different meanings, so please don't refer to a word in the Holy Quran by using the apparently similar Urdu word.

Re: how many of you can actually understand the Quraan?
It is true that there are many arabic words used in urdu but bear in mind many have totally different meanings in urdu .. so understanding of such words is a must… for example…
Zaleel in arabic means weak but in urdu it refers to a curse word…
Maulana in arabic only refers to ALLAH where as in urdu the context changes and it means an imaam with knowledge.
Wallaho Alam..
It does make a difference if you read the urdu translation of QURAN word by word and learn just a basic grammar of how to conjure words together… therefore, as far as literal meanings go, I can understand Quran without reading its translation…
Re: how many of you can actually understand the Quraan?
I heard this story today about this man wanting to learn some grammar and then he goes to learn it but he finds it really hard so he decides to give up. Then one day the man is pulling some water out of a kind of well, and the rope rubs along the rock as he pulls it up. He notices a groove in the rock and wonders. The rock is stronger than the rope but due to repition the rope has managed to make a groove in the rock. He says subhaanAllah and then goes back to learn Grammar. The same man then becommes a scholar.
amazing! yeah...so the moral of the story is not to give up no matter how hard it may seem :)
