I don't know if it would work well at a desi wedding, but many American couples ask for a gift to charity instead of wedding presents. So maybe instead of budgeting it as part of your wedding, you could sacrifice the wedding cash/gifts and put out a sign at your wedding or cards on the tables that announce that the bride and groom are donating all gifts to help another couple in need...
