How important is to know Urdu in Bollywood? (merged with other Urdu-Hindi discussion)

[note]Sorry guys, i have to merged this into new discussion[/note]

How badly the standards have dropped in India.

Now you know why they want all the 'besura' Pakistani singers sent back to where they came from - so Indians can listen to some good music :)

Despite having an institution like Aligarh, you guys couldn't learn Urdu. Have another go at correcting that! :)

I grew up learning Hindi, not Urdu

Urdu Pakistan mein sikhate hain, India mein nahin…

Second part of your statement is inaccurate, Urdu India main bhe sikate hain.

Only in Madarsas and other Muslim run schools. It is not as widely taught as either English or Hindi.

So now you're in agreement that Urdu is taught in India. The question wasn't how widespread it is.

Zobia why did you do this? + this 'debate' wasn't even about Bollywood, so the title has baffled me?

Re: How important is to know Urdu in Bollywood? (merged with other Urdu-Hindi discuss

punjabee, if i am not wrong u r an indian..so can you distinguish between what is urdu an what is hindi in any movie?

Re: How important is to know Urdu in Bollywood? (merged with other Urdu-Hindi discuss

Knowing Urdu is not very important for in Bollywood, since Bollywood films are made in Hindi or Hindustani. Even with that a lot of liberties are taken i.e. Mumbaiyya Hindi or Madrasi version of Hindi.

Hindi movie songs do use Urdu words sometimes, and it helps if the singers have a good 'talaffuz' and general understanding of what they are singing.

jaise audiences...
waise hi standards.

Re: How important is to know Urdu in Bollywood? (merged with other Urdu-Hindi discuss

haha, but do u know most of the time they are talking in urdu and not hindi? or atleast contemporary form of hindi is basically urdu :p

Urdu is what you guys speak in Pakistan, Hindi is what we speak in India. Hindustani is a kind of an ‘in-between’ mixture, which used to be (and still is) spoken in parts of UP, Bihar, Delhi etc.

A lot of Bollywood lyricists use Hindustani for the songs that they write e.g. Javed Akhtar, Prasoon Joshi…

Then can you change the title of this thread to something more appropriate to what me and Panjabi Pa G were referring to? As it wasn't about Bollywood but now it has become a discussion about Bollywood. :)

Re: How important is to know Urdu in Bollywood? (merged with other Urdu-Hindi discuss

Zobia, the urdu in Bollywood is limited to very few poets/writers now. Most songs in Indian movies can be written by my 6 year old… I mean how much of a poet do you need to be to write what’s written today for films :smack:. Coming back to hindi, unfortunately, hindi isn’t as poetic as urdu and today, even the hindi is messed up with slangs, English and all that stuff.

However, urdu is taught in many universities and a lot of work is still done in urdu, such as islamic research and publishing, even urdu literature etc. Commercially, however, it’s mostly a distorted version of hindi.

and what you guys were discussing?
both of you were gone from mujic to urdu to urdu institution to its ratio.

suggest me the title and i will change it.

Yes, thats true for most modern Hindi songs because lyrics have lost their relevance and music/beats are more important to sell the song. However, if you look at songs from 1980s and prior, they had a lot of lyrical value.

Not Bollywood. :D

There wasn't a need to start a new thread to begin with (as I'm at the top of the list, now my name is being associated with starting it), but I suppose now it's too late to even question it.
