how hard is to break the habit of

eating haram food?
me n my friend keep arguing cuz she thinks its like smoking n u cant just stop eating out like that n i think u can but according her thats cuz i dont like meat n stuff

yeah, i have the same problem....

thing is, if u never begin eating haram food in the first place then there's no problem...its hard to stop though, coz i hate fish and plain veggies...right now i just stick to pizza and salads...

i think its best to just faze it out...now i dont' bring that food home 90 % of the time i cannot be bothered to walk the 3 (long) blocks to get subway/mcdonalds/popeyes.

yup its very hard once you get used to it...i have lived on university campus for a year and thank god after all the temptation and hunger somehow i managed to avoid it :D Some people can't help it becuz they look at it as having a second choice. If there isn't any good vegetarian meal then its alright to go for non-zabihah....its this thinking which makes it even harder to let go.

im not proud of this but i used to eat jhatka inititally when i went to america coz most Muslims around me used to and i thought only pork was the haraam thing, the jhatka issue dint seem that big. so i ate jhatka for abt 3 months...

but when i came to pak in my first winter break, everyone made me realise that its really not good to eat that...

i never touched it after that alhamdulillah and dont want to ever inshallah

i do know many ppl who eat that tho, some of em r much more religious than me

but since then my whole way of looking at that meat has changed, maybe i brought it upon myself, not sure, but i feel like its not clean when i see it so i automatically dont feel like eating it

out of all the non halal food outside...i only eat the chicken
I try to avoid beef in general
mMmMmM KFC ...now i am hungry :(

I’m not too sure if you’re specifically talking about jhatka meat here or eating out in general.

I always used to think that any meat slaughtered other than by Muslims falls under the category of haram.

However, after extensive research and discussion, I have finally become comfortable consuming the meat of ahle-kitaab.

Here’s a fatwa that neatly summarises it all:
Meat from dubious restaurants

Keep in mind, this is not the only source that I relied upon. I asked a lot of my friends (very religious and knowledgeable) and spoke to a few scholars and read fatawa of many others (online). I’m very content now, alhamdulillah.

Often I feel that South Asian Muslims have made Islam harder than it is. It’s only after reading, reflecting and speaking to those who have knowledge, I have come to realize that indeed Islam is very easy to follow. We just have to stick by Quran and authentic Sunnah rather than relying on those who do not possess proper knowledge.

speaking of indulging in haram things. How many of you smoke. I started at about 13 years old and now I can’t stop myself. I go through 2 packs everyday. :teary1:

I tried everything but it works temporarily. I chew gums or wear patch, I stop smoking. 2 or 3 weeks later, something comes over me and go on a smoking rampage again. :teary1: I really wanna quit but I can’t.

TK - the meat served outside is not haram. It is not zabiha. Haram is a very strong term and should not be used so lightly :)

ATL - have you tried cutting down while wearing the patch or chewing gum?

What really annoys me is when people look down at me for eating chicken when they themselves are doing things that are un-Islamic, like smoking, having sex, getting high, etc.

ALRIGHT!!! Now I won’t feel guilty next time I visit burger king :jhanda: Most of the times I read Bismillah before I start eating, so. Allah maaf karney wala hai.

It's all in your heart. If you fear Allah, you will easily over come the situation.

Keep in mind that the fatwa mentioned above only represents one school of thought which only takes the argument from Quran that eating from ahl-e-kitab is halal while other three schools of thoughts go further in details and explain that it is halal only when it is slaughtered the prescribed way to the people of the book, and same apply for the slaughtered meat by a muslim for that matter.

But guys look at it this way, dietary laws are important as eating for humans is just as breathing and we cannot live without eating. So I think by imposing these dietary restriction Allah (swt) gives us another chance to be remindful of him so we can be his humble creatures.

hmm so meat from ahle kitab is ok right..well these they do kufar too, so r they still considered ppl of the book?

plus my question was more like if u believe that the meat u eat outside is haram but u still do it..Actually my friend was like she wuold never marry a guy that wasnt careful about wats haram n wats not..n i was like well u can always make him eat halal n she was like its not that easy so thats how i started wondering

A lot of things aren't easy but you do them for the sake of Allah SWT.

To add to this point, it is always best to eat zabiha even if we're allowed eating from ahl-e-kitab. Kosher laws are very similar to the Islamic dietary laws so they would be the next best alternative, I think, to zabiha food.

You can check out the Zabiha website to find halal restaurants around you. For more information about halal/haraam food and related things, the Eat-Halal website is really good.

Slowly progress towards authentically halal food;

1) Start with halal meat grocery at home. Once you are done with that;
2) Start eating fish when you go to a non-halal food joint.
3) Start eating at halal restaurants only.

:-) See it's easy.

Disclaimer: I don't consider jhatka as haraam, just not desirable/preferred when proper halal meat is available.

what is jhatka ?

^ from my knowledge its meat thats killed w/o any religious ritual (i.e. halal, kosher, etc)

really?..iv never heard of it..thanks love

Iv never ate meat in places where they dont sell Halal food, and yea i know how does one trust these places, but i trust them as they say its halal...i dont know..thats what my parents always taught me.

I prefer vegetarian food from such places anyway...

The easiest way to break this habit is to learn cooking. With practice, you can cook much better than what is available at mcdonalds/bk etc.

Shikra, I hope you do your research first properly before following anything. I don't want people coming back to complaining that I misled them.

~Tikhi Jalebi~, to answer your original question, if it's haram then I won't eat it or I'll try my best to stay away from it.
