how haram is a tattoo anyway?

hello,
ive been searching the site for threads related on the topic. i didnt find too many that gave me a very satisfactory answer, or perhaps the answer i wanted to read. ive wanted to get a tattoo for a little while, i dont think its a big deal, my partner doesnt either, nor do my older sister and brother in law, infact they want ones of their own. now we;re not the " too liberal" type of people, but we all conclude that “religiously” it shouldnt be a big deal to get one. “culturally” speaking however it is considered by others to bean incredibly big deal. which is why we havent gotten ours yet.

ive kind of always associated getting ears / nose pierced to be kind of the same deal as getting a tattoo, doesnt matter if someone says that the peircing is not permenant, we tend to keep those tiny holes all our lives anyway so it kind of is. you cant fool God by giving the logic of impermanence on that one.

my question is , if culture hadnt made a big deal on this whole tattoo issue, would you be more open to the idea of getting one? or would you still give a religious stance on not getting it? are your reasons for not getting one more religious than cultural?

oh and if you’re reasons for not getting one are not cultural nor religious, feel free to ignore the thread.

Re: how haram is a tattoo anyway?

I would love to know the religious view point too....

Re: how haram is a tattoo anyway?

You can't get one because of religious reasons, not cultural reasons. Some people in Pakistan do get tattoos because of cultural reasons, such as some Pathan who get their names tattooed on their forearms.

There is a hadeeth where the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) curses the person who gets a tattoo and also the ones who are into the business of tattooing. Also he said that people with tattoos will never make it into heaven.

Now it's up to you to decide how much this Hadeeth means to you.

Re: how haram is a tattoo anyway?

You can choose whether you want to stay in line with cultural values or not, so that isn’t an issue. Go ahead and get a tattoo if you really want to.

Its the religious aspect that one must thoroughly think about before making any changes to the body for decorative purposes… Though there isn’t a crystal clear verse in the Quran stating “thou shalt not get tattoos”, there is a clear disapproval of hurting yourself on purpose… tattoos are painful… I wouldn’t hurt myself for decorative purposes and so I’d stay away from tattoos… On top of that, there is the hadith that Z posted.

Lastly, as muslims we’re supposed to be looking up to Hazrat Mohammad (saw) and following his sunnah… If you’re ever stuck at something, all you have to do is ask yourself what our beloved prophet saw would have done… Did He have any tattoos? None that I’m aware of.

But I wouldn’t mind kohl’ing up me eyes :chilly: coz He did wear eye kohl!

Re: how haram is a tattoo anyway?

Defo haram.. too late for me tho as I got mine done agessss ago.. The rulings regarding piercings seem a bit inconsistent but don't think there's any doubt or leeway in regards to tattoos..

Re: how haram is a tattoo anyway?

There is no "how" haram. Haram is Haram. Period. No questions. And I learned the answer to it when it was on QTV and other geo programs where scholars were asked this question and they said it is prohibited.

Re: how haram is a tattoo anyway?

apart from it being haram,

you will puke looking at your tattoo when you will be old.

Re: how haram is a tattoo anyway?

^Having just the name of ur other half or something small and discrete shouldn't make u want to puke..

Re: how haram is a tattoo anyway?

having just the name of your other half (tattoo) is pretty childish

Re: how haram is a tattoo anyway?

well from what i think, a tattoo is a picutre, which we shouldnt be taking/storing/ anyway, and by writing someones name on your arm, is a form of idolising, which is haram. piercing your ears are not a form of idolising, its a hole not a picutre, name or resemblence to someone or something.tattoos are always a form of idolising, be it ur spouse name, kids name or whatever.

Re: how haram is a tattoo anyway?

^But a lot of people just have sayings inked on them, not always a pic or a name (or even if it's a name it's usually a family member eg new child or lover, I wouldn't even call it idolising, more like 'remembering' or bring thankful for them.. after all people don't idolise their babies, do they)..

Re: how haram is a tattoo anyway?

That's ur opinion.. A lot of ppl would say no more childish than thinking of marriage as just a halal way of getting laid ;)

Re: how haram is a tattoo anyway?

Just to enhance my knowledge really.....isn't waxing also painful? or plucking eyebrows...or for that matter wearing high heels?

Re: how haram is a tattoo anyway?

^ Hair removal comes under hygiene. =)

High heels and tattoos? Really?

Re: how haram is a tattoo anyway?

Guys will never understand. I want a tattoo. :hmmm:

Re: how haram is a tattoo anyway?

Me toooooooo…but I was told am not allowed to :hinna:

so what abt nose rings and earing? isn’t that hurting urself for decor?

Re: how haram is a tattoo anyway?

Someone told me they would slap me if I did, so never thought about it again. I was kidding about the tattoo thing btw lol! My mum would kill me if she finds out.

I don't like the concept of tattooing someone's name on to your body. For me that symbolises that person's control and ownership over you, it's like you are b**ng yourself, like herd owners used to do to their cattle back in the days. Even if I am with someone, I am still my own individual and not someone's slave. I don't see anything romantic in b**ng yourself.

Oh and for reasons other than religion, I think these days especially, you are never sure if you are going to be with that person all those years later. Divorces are on a long time high. What if you get divorced? Your husband or wife dies? You get married again? I am not sure it would be a great thing for the new partner/husband wife to see on your body, the name of your ex/deceased husband or wife.

Tattoo removal is very costly as well. Cheryl Cole had branded herself as Mrs. Cole and look what happened. She got divorced and went through an expensive and long (1 year) tattoo laser removal procedure. It's just better to not do it. Why subject your skin to such torture and let us not forget the risks of skin cancer.

Re: how haram is a tattoo anyway?

tattoos are over rated now. anyone and their mother’s got a tattoo now. its body modification that’s the new in thing. or become a hipster!

Re: how haram is a tattoo anyway?

Aaliyah, the pain you experience while getting a tattoo is nothing compared to the pain that you experience while getting a piercing and it only lasts a second or so. Does that mean one is allowed and the other isn’t? As I said, there is no crystal clear verse in the Quran prohibiting tattoos or piercings but modesty is clearly pointed out in the Quran. Flamboyant tattoos or loads n loads of piercings all over the face & body isn’t very modest, is it? So we have to make decisions for ourselves in the light of Quran and sunnah.

Re: how haram is a tattoo anyway?

There aren't any crystal clear ayahs in the Qur'aan that prohibit tattoos either..
