Re: How does it work?
If they have put a demand, they surely have the reasons in their mind. It could be either for other siblings (and I know such families where it happens) or it could be because they want to save money for the future when they are scared their children (or sons, particularly) will “change” and wont support them anymore so parents wont be dependent then. In your case, I think his parents just want to bound him so that he may never feel free of the responsibility and obligations towards his parents and the family, you know what I mean. Its the same fundamental mentality k shadi hogai hai to beta badal jaye ga.
Whatever it be, and though many parents (as the posts above tell us) never even appreciate or acknowledge that their sons support them, it remains the primary responsibility of a son to support his parents, regardless of whatever the issues be. He should have faith that Allah will add to his income as a reward because being good and kind to ones’ parents (regardless of how they treat you) is mandatory in Islam. When we know that Allah appreciates this, why do we care if the parents do or dont.
Yes this is the case that they want to bound him but bounding may lead financial issues at our end and they are not understanding it. I have tried talking to him abt this. He skipped the topic altogether! :S
