How Do You View Sikhs?

Re: How Do You View Sikhs?

Really? From my experience they dont feel close to Pakistanis/muslims but close to their fellow indians.

Re: How Do You View Sikhs?

I like them a lot. They are very similar to us, except the religion.

Yes, except the good looking ladies.

Re: How Do You View Sikhs?

You are right My Indian Punjabi friend have no manners at all opening my cup board taking things without permission and using my towel and then going with me to the shop and say I dont have money do u have it and then pay less than the original amount and dont even know how to eat like you are not a human being

My experience with them is very bad

Re: How Do You View Sikhs?

Hain? How do they eat?

Re: How Do You View Sikhs?

Not going to negate your experience. All I expressed is what I felt.

Re: How Do You View Sikhs?

As humans.

Re: How Do You View Sikhs?

this is convenient isn’t it, but not the full truth. after 1857’s revolt, the brits systematically broke the back of the heartland of the revolt - UP, CP/MP, parts of rajasthan, bihar - and recruited army conscripts in large numbers from areas that had remained subservient and docile to the raj - punjabis featured heavily - and no, not just sikhs - muslims made up larger numbers that helped supress the revolt - punjabis as well as pathans, took the bait offered under the “martial races” listing of the colonialists. this legacy continues into the punjabi-heavy armies of both india and pakistan to this day, and the reason UP and bihar are the most poverty-striken parts of the subcontinent.

Re: How Do You View Sikhs?

Please post the source. Especially the red part.

Re: How Do You View Sikhs?

In this era, Sikhs are comfortable to get along with. Had no problem so far…

(Don’t wanna get into history, its painful. Just like the massacres of Jallian wala bagh is painful for Sikh community)

Re: How Do You View Sikhs?

I have had a Sikh friend and now Israeli friends and numerous Indian ones a few Turkish ones. All of them are just like us, only difference is religion. So I view them or anyone different as I would view someone who was a Pakistani or a Muslim.

Re: How Do You View Sikhs?

this is common knowledge, but sure. here you go.

The Sepoy Rebellion of 1857-59 - A. H. AMIN

Now, the above calculation leaves us with 10,875 which may have been used in the entire fighting distributed in penny packets since major fighting was done at Delhi, Lucknow and Kanpure by irregular units raised in Punjab and Frontier. A glance at units employed at Delhi and Lucknow puts at rest all doubts about the ethnic composition of the native troops:-

Delhi
1st Punjab Cavalry Sikhs - Punjabi Muslims Pathans-Some Hindustani Muslims.
2nd Punjab Cavalry Sikhs - Pathans - Punjabi Muslims - Some Hindustani Muslims
5th Punjab Cavalry As above
Hodson’s Irregular Force Sikhs/Punjabi Muslims
Sirmoor Battalion Gurkha
Kumqon Battalion Gurkha
Corps of Guides Pathan/Sikh/Punjabi Muslims
4th Sikh Infantry Sikh + Punjabi Muslims
1st Punjab Infantry Sikh - Punjabi Muslims - Pathan
2nd Punjab Infantry ditto
4th Punjab Infantry ditto
Baluch Battalion Baluchis
Note:- It may be noted that the Hindustani Muslims/Ranghars were the nucleus of all new Punjab Cavalry as well as Infantry units raised during the period 1846-56 including the Corps of Guides.

Lucknow - March 1858
1st Sikh Irregular Cavalry Sikh - Punjabi Muslims
2nd Punjab Cavalry Sikh - Punjabi Muslims - Pathan
5th Punjab Cavalry Sikh - Punjabi Muslims - Pathan
Oudh Irregular Cavalry Sikh, Punjabi Muslims
1st Punjab Cavalry Sikh - Punjabi Muslims - Pathan
Hodson’s Horse Sikh - Punjabi Muslims
Regiment of Ferozepur Sikh Pure
4th Punjab Rifles Sikh - Punjabi Muslims - Pathan
2nd Punjab Infantry Sikh - Punjabi Muslims - Pathan
It is interesting to note that 5th Punjab Infantry in its regimental history claims to have killed Subedar Bakht Khan the sepoy leader at Delhi in the Nawab Ganj area in 1858. It was stated in the history of the Frontier Force Rifles compiled by W.E.H. Condon and published in 1953540 that Naik Habibullah and sepoy Fateh Singh of 5th Punjab Infantry killed Subedar Bakht Khan in the Oudh Nepal rain forest area of Terai in 1858 and both of these soldiers were awarded the Indian Order of Merit. John Lawrence the Chief Commissioner of Punjab in his letter dated 25 May 1858 appended in the Punjab Mutiny reports addressed to Mr. Edwonstone, Secretary to the Government of India stated the composition of the Irregular Forces of Punjab as following 541:-

**Muslims - Punjabi - 24,027

Sikhs - 13,344

Hillmen - 2,203

Hindustanis - 2,430

Hindus - Punjabi - 5,336

Christians - 16**

Re: How Do You View Sikhs?

All you have shared here is the composition of selective compositions of different infantries.

You and the writers have failed based on your post, to show Muslims somehow helped British Imperialists defeating Sepoy rebellion or 1857 freedom war.

I have searched this and besides your source, there is no credible source which shows Muslims in Punjab regiment indeed acted on behalf of British.

A regiment may claim to have killed Bukht Khan but who actually did it is unknown.

What is more commonly found is:

1- Muslims and Hindus took a large part in the rebellion.

2- Event was originated from British army using a prticular rifle to be loaded with the bullets which had beef or pork fat used as grease coating the bullet.

3- Both Hindus and Muslims (Especially in Bengal) refused to comply with using these bullets.

4- British army leader handled this harshly and with brutality. Many Muslims and Hindu Army members were treated badly and they were court marshaled.

5- Despite some sources the use of beef or pork not being true, this harsh treatment indeed made army members more suspicious of British intention.

6- This was coupled with Christian missionaries coming the the areas. Making both Hindus and Muslims more skeptical of British forcing people convert to Christianity.

7- Sikhs were not seen as good people and barbaric by Hindu Brahmins and Muslims did not have any closeness to them either.

8- Sikhs found new masters as their saviors and in hatred of Brahmins, they sided for British.

9- If one reads Sikh written articles, they deny it.

10- Regardless, **Sikhs are still seen as British Raj supporters, much more than Muslims and Hindus.

Re: How Do You View Sikhs?

A common knowledge that is not so common.

Muslims were at the forefront of 1857 war. Both Hindus and Muslims were unanimous in support of Mughals under Bahadur Shah. This is why he and his family were arrested or executed afterwards.
What is also a common knowledge is that sikhs did not take part in that war. Rather they sided with British in defeating those who wanted British ouster. They did so because of their hatred of Muslims in general and Mughals in particular.

Re: How Do You View Sikhs?

well clearly if it doesn’t jive with “pakistan studies” it must be untrue, yeah? it wasnt all united muslims vs. rest of the world. pick up a book or two on the first war. it was not just sikhs, rest of punjab wasn’t too thrilled either under mughal rule. it wasn’t like punjabi muslims were the same as “hindustani” muslims in mughal administrations - that class was almost entirely non-punjabi. dullah bhatti, anyone? the english east india company was very fair in their rule of punjab compared to the mughals and had the loyalty of the muslims, who didn’t lift a finger during the sepoy mutiny. in fact, served in regiments that actively killed the revolt, especially in delhi.

Re: How Do You View Sikhs?

here’s one more from a kashmiri muslim’s site, he gives references for his figures. just like the previous pakistani website i cited did. not just opinions like yours.

Re: How Do You View Sikhs?

Again you posted the composition of British army. Fine. Still not proven that Muslims of Punjab Regiment really took part in decisive victory of British forces against the revolt.

And the link of the blog of Dr. Shabir Choudhry has logical blunders and mistakes.

"British Army in India before 1857 revolt : 272,418
.

  • British Combat Troops 26,000
  • British Non Combat 10,000
  • Indian 236,418 (Zero Sikh because it was prohibited in their religion to work for British Government)
    .* Punjabi Moslims 23,000

British India Army after 1857 revolt : 32,000*
.

  • Punjabi Moslims 6,900 (remained faithful the rest went home)
  • Other Indians … Zero (all revolted or joined the Rebels)"

Zero Sikhs? Really?

All but Muslims deserted? Really?

Somehow all of a sudden Sikhs appeared in Punjabi forces supporting British forces from being zero in number and ALL people except 'Moslems" in Punjab deserted to join other rebellions. Yeah right!

Dr. Shabir needs to research a bit more I think.

Re: How Do You View Sikhs?

Sikhs were afraid of having Mughals ruled again if revolt was to be successful. At least this is the common reason cited for their support for British Imperialists.

Not only Muslims, Sikhs also did not like Hindu Rajputs and decided to side with British army.

Re: How Do You View Sikhs?

The support Sikhs provided to British against fellow Indians is well known. Not even Sikhs dispute it.
Hindus and Muslims were not the same nation yet they considered themselves close enough when compared to totally foreign British. Yet sikhs sided with those total strangers.
The word traitor comes to mind.

Today Sikhs realize the role they played in prolonging the enslavement of the subcontinent. This is why they make excuses. Read this from some sikh website. Look at the people’s comments:

sikhchic.com | Article Detail

They are exposed when they continue to call the 1857 war as “mutiny”. As if British had the right to rule, and those who tried to throw them out were mutineers or trouble-makers.

British themselves admitted that sikh help was the reason they conquered Delhi from Mughals.

Referring to the British victory over Indians in 1857, William Howard Russell of London Times wrote: “Our siege of Delhi would have been impossible, if the Rajas of Patiala and Jhind (Jind) had not been our friends”.

Sikhs did that to millions of people in the subcontinent only due to their extreme hatred of Muslims. They were unable to attack the strong Mughal army, so instead of attacking Delhi they started picking up fights with Pashtuns only because they were Muslims too.
