Re: How do you serve guests at eid?

MAshallah very nice. May I ask where you found those steal pots and do they keep the food warm throughout the event?

Re: How do you serve guests at eid?

^ Those are chafing dishes and can be found anywhere including Costco/Sam's Club in the US/Canada and even on E-bay.

And yes, it does keep the food very warm. Keeping in mind that we usually heat the food before replenishing the chafing dishes, so it goes into the dishes piping hot and then stays warm.

Re: How do you serve guests at eid?

We have 2 big gatherings on Eid. This tradition was started by parents back in the "early days" of our community when there were only about 5-6 Indian/pakistani muslim families in our area. Right after Eid Namaz, breakfast would be a traditional Hyderabadi naashta at my Ammi's house, and then the evening dinner party would be at my Nani's house.

After my Ammi passed away, we now have the naashta at my nani's house, and rotate the evening party amongst my mami's and khala's houses. We are about 65 people in the immediate family all together and we always have about another 4-5 families who are close friends who join us every year. For the dinner, we either cater, or divvy up the food amongst our selves, so the menu varies every year.

But the naashta after namaz is the same every year:

halwa/puri/aloo channa
kichri/kheema/tamatar ki chutney (hyderabadi staples)
nihari
usually a gurda/kaleji dish especially on Eid ul Adha
sheer khurma
gulab jamun

At the morning gathering...the younger kids (12 and under) are given their Eidi/gifts to keep them occupied, and I am usually in charge of some sort of game/activitiy for them. Last year I did an Islamic Jeopardy and it was a big hit!

At the dinner party, the adults (all married couples) do a gift exchange and the older kids (middle school up to unmarried college age) are given their Eidi/gifts.

Re: How do you serve guests at eid?

Sehrysh, we have the exact same chafing dishes!

Re: How do you serve guests at eid?

How do you serve guests at eid?

I like the islamic jeopardy idea kc!!! So fun!!!!

Re: How do you serve guests at eid?

^ Yes!!! Such a lifesaver!!! We all share/rotate them amongst the khandaan. In fact, I just used them a couple of months ago at the Mother’s Appreciation Brunch my masjid youth group kids organized. Everyone was so impressed with the set up, lol! :cb:
