Do you invite them or its more of an open house/walk in kind of setup? I like the second type but then you are stuck at home for a long long time, plus what if people show up when you are taking a nap or something like that?
WE normally give a time slot to every one who is invited so its flexible for them and we do not get bounded either. Normally its from Noon to 5pm
Typical menu includes
Sheerkhorma
Some snacks such as patties, samosey , choley, nimko etc
2-3 main dishes such as Haleem, Nihari, Pulaoo, Tandoori Chicken etc
Couple of times we also did Nashta which was after Eid Namaz and had
Puri, aaloo sabzi, choley sabzi, Qeema, Halva
We’ve never been hosts for eid. Usually just go to our relatives who live in a different city
They have a open house/every one’s invited kind of policy. We go on chand raat, read eid namaz on eid day with them at their masjid, go back to their house and eat sawaiyan Then have yummy yummy food and mithaayi. Our extended family is hugeeee .. so at least 100 people are usually in one home together on eid.
IN our case, we also give people window but we give them shorter window. Plus we take more invitations then to give them out, so mostly we are out of house the whole day :D
Wendy, 100 people! that is huge family Mashallah. I am sure you guys enjoy that a lot.
We have an open invite and the family all cooks as milly would put it "eleventy billion" things. The people just come and go completely unmindful of the time frame given for the eid walk-in iftar. A few eids ago, we had guest showing up at 11pm. Its a good way to meet everyone and see everyone but the kaam is wayy too much and I sleep angry at the world!! I wake up feeling much happier because it was a big task and people walked out happy!!! The things we have learned is... Always have backups like those frozen store bought food items, keep menu to 4 to 6 items and no more.. Quantity is better than quality for these unpredicted fiascos waiting to happen and be firm with the time frame and when you spread the word and make sure people know you have other places to be. Its MY eid too dammit!!!! Our eid menu is something like haleem, nihari, matar chawal, a few diff sorts of desserts, chicken kathi rolls, diff types of sandwiches, dahi batray, some sort of fried chicken, some sort of kababs and tiny appetizers of sorts to munch on and usually we have loads of homemade patties wagera too and some sort of keema noodles for the children.
ooh and this one pointer deserves a post of its own.. Ladies if you are hosting a party and you arent rich like the queen like me, avoid wearing a super expensive suit. Pray in your eid best but host in a suit fancy suit you dont have much feelings for. The smell of food thats in your house sinks into your clothes and uff the smell of fried smelly oil is worse!!! Save your precious outfits and host in a suit you might be willing to part with. Not only did my suit smell, it became a canvas for oil stains, chutneys and some things I couldnt recognize!! Happy hosting!!!
Oh and we have huge family in Toronto so normally Eid's next weekend we have ONE-DISH thing. We normally rent a community hall and have it there and on average around 15-20 families attended these ONE-Dish (so around 75-100 ppl) and of course Tonz of food of different variety. We just contribute money from each family for hall, paper products and eid-goodie-bags for kids.
We dont have any family of our own here, but a good social circle of 7-8 families. Last eid, we had a party at our front yard (not much of a yard but as we live at a dead end street, we took over part of curb and street). We live next to woods so I collected long branches and made tripods using them and hung elctric bulbs and palced them around the outdoor seating area. It turned more into an evening/night private street side party. We even had a bonfire at the end. It was a hit as kids had plenty space to run and no danger of any mess or spills. All those families demanded the same party again. I will post pics this time
My sister hosts an Eid party after eid. Eid day is for family, but the next week she does an open house. People are invited between 6-11pm and they come and go as they please.
Here is the menu from last year (my sister emails it to everyone for approval and I had to look up last year’s as we’re going over the menu for this year so had to figure out what NOT to make )
**Appetizers
**Almond bow-ties
Sandwich tray with egg-salad, tuna salad and grilled veggie wraps
Mini harra-masala ki kebabs
Qeema samosas
That is one asweome Menu Sehrysh, but now that Devilicious pointed out, how do you manage if you run out of something, especially in appetizer category. Obviously you cant spend the whole day in kitchen so you must prepare a good quantity in advance. What happens if more than expected guests showed up?
Oh, we cook A LOT of food! We have about 100 people over throughout the evening. Here is a pic from the year before (I remembered I had blogged about it). There’s so much food and so much variety that even if we ran out of one item (and alhamdolillah, we haven’t so far), there are so many other options for the people to choose from.
Cheese and cracker tray, assorted hor d’ouvres.
Shikampur kebab:
Nauratan vegetable:
Ginger chicken:
Shish kebabs:
Zafrani rice:
Gajar ka halwa and rice noodle sewaiyan (cakes and fruits trays toround out the sweets):
Tiramisu
