I’m not going to lie, I am a very good cook. >.< And I’ve taught quite a few recipes to several people and I really wanted to keep track of all my recipes (my own or ones I’ve learnt off websites/cooking shows etc) and compile them into a journal or a diary so I could refer back to it, esp. when I’m married and don’t want to call up my mom.
How do you guys store/file recipes? I’m thinking of buying a large/thick Moleskine or Mead journal and start writing it down by hand. I like the idea of an heirloom recipe book so I want something that’ll hold up for decades. What do you guys suggest?
I have started working on this......i have this huge word document that is divided into two major sections desi and international cuisine each section has subsections fav., tried and tested , seemingly interesting (the ones i want to try ) and ammaz recipies. and each subsection has meat, vege, dessert and appetizer section. Some day i will print it out and put everything in a binder but binders don't have search options
i have about 3 2 inch binders that have recipes i've printed out or taken from magazines that i put in those plastic sleeves....I also have 2 notebook/journals where I noted down my mom's recipes, totkas, tips & advice....
It's becoming more cumbersome to store though (i only have so many bookshelves, lol!) so I'm trying to slowly navigate to more digital format...i have "recipe boxes" on foodnetwork.com and other such sites, I also now LOVING pinterest.com because not only can I grab from others, but I can upload my own "pins"/recipes!
I have made a folder and then subfolders in my hotmail account
When ever i like a recipe , i write it and send it to myself in my email account .. then save it in the subfolder …
it helps tremendously coz no paper handling, I can access it no matter what country I am in , deleting/editing is much easier in soft copies …
sounds like a great idea. I wonder if you could do that for gmail.com accounts? I have tried writing down recipes on index cards and filed them in a file box. definitely do need to find a better way so that I can pass on the recipes to my kids.
Twinkle, i havnt used Gmail much .. but I know its really really easy to store recipes in Hotmail .. sometime back three of my friends and me , we had shared one account opened it only to manage our recipes and we only included tried and tested recipes , ( tried and tested by one of us )
It was a great resource still is ... I think its very very manageable ..Mainly coz you can create catagories using subfolders and then in each subfolder you can actually search for the relevant recipe, the search function is really good ..
I keep recipes on my laptop (I save on Pages documents and include photos as well) but I hate having to prop my laptop on the shelf while cooking which is why I just wanted a hard copy. I don’t like binders which is why I wanted a notebook because I like the idea of hand-written recipes >.<
It’s not practical but I think I’ll get a really thick black leather journal and divide it myself into sections for Desi, non-desi khanay (from my mom and family recipes etc) and then another for desserts. And possibly another for sides (like breads, salads, chutney’s etc)
I ended up making a diary because accessing the internet was tedious. I only add recipes that are absolutely must makes for my family. I need to put more in there.
I have started a private blog on wordpress just recently and put up all my recipes there..with pics sometimes!
Ou, that's a great idea! But then it requires you to have your laptop or the device on your kitchen counter which is why I want to start a diary in the first place. #firstworldproblems
It’s the size of a Moleskine but much better quality and has enough pages + a pocket in the back and a ribbon bookmark. AND BEST OF ALL? It matches my pink mixer!
