Re: How do you address your mother in law?
She is living with in-laws. I dont see any problem to call MIL "ammi/ammi jaan etc".

Re: How do you address your mother in law?
or you girls can say loudly "ammi jaaan" and then under lips "nikaal loon gi"
Re: How do you address your mother in law?
**for those people with issues as to what to call their MILS, i have a very simple solution...and, that is:
call you own mom as *MOM SR. and your MIL as *MOM JR.

You are welcome. ![]()
I like your wicked sense of humor and your sarcasm.:k:
Let us get together sometime for a cup of tea.
Re: How do you address your mother in law?
perfect recipe for disaster:hehe:
Re: How do you address your mother in law?
I don’t know why some girls have problem calling MIL ami. They presrent the logic that why would we call someone ami when she is NOT our ami
My aunty has 2 DILs with one calling her ami and the other calling her aunty and she has better relations with the one who calls her ami. So the way you call someone does affect the relations.
Re: How do you address your mother in law?
Who wants to have good relations with someone who is so shallow that she discriminates based on how her DIL addresses her. ![]()
Re: How do you address your mother in law?
When I met my MIL for the first time before our marriage, she told me that she'd like me to call her "ammi" and I was perfectly OK with that. Hubby calls my mom what I call her as well.

absolutely true. but MIL / DIL relationship is complicated enough so if someone's not behaving right, it doesn't mean you should do the same in return, instead of trying to fix things

agreed, ok maybe the MIL shouldnt be so sensitive but if she is the DIL might as well just call her ammi to avoid complications?
Re: How do you address your mother in law?
Because she is NOT their mother. How hard is that to understand?
And its retarded of the MIL to “force” herself on the DIL as a “mother” because she’s not her mother.
If aunty has a bad relationship with someone simply because she’s called “aunty” and not “ammi” then that’s pretty shallow.
I just wonder how many men in here call their MIL “Ammi”?
Re: How do you address your mother in law?
^ exactly....
...
......and whats wrong with aunty?... aunty is aunty... its not gaali....
and you force someone to call you ammi and think that persons now loves you more and have more respect for you... how stupid is that.
and it doesnt matter what other daughters in law calls yours MIL ... you are Not there to compete with your dewaraani or jhathaani
Re: How do you address your mother in law?
If a MIL gets happy and conflicts can be avoided by such a small gesture of calling her ami, there is not harm in calling her ami. I call my grandmother bari ami, my chachi choti ami. So it would not matter much if I call my MIL ami too. Whats a big deal?

You have a habit of calling everybody ammi , so your opinion does not count. :@:
Re: How do you address your mother in law?
I call my mum in law Phopo, cos she is, lol. I would feel uncomfortable calling anyone ammi who isnt my actual ammi quite frankly. I could try and say it, but it would probably come out as a mumbled Amm.....that's the best I could manage.
Re: How do you address your mother in law?
I have to agree with Ashy, what is the big deal?! Showing ziddi is only going to make matters worse so why complicate an already jittery MIL/ DIL relationship even further? Would you not respect your MIL in the same way as you respect your mother? Don't your husband's family become your own?
Re: How do you address your mother in law?
we were 'engaged' for a long time and during that time and before i always called her 'aunty'. also there was already a lot of resentment between us because she didn't want me at all and tried all kinds of things to split us up. i really didn't have warm feelings for her and i doubt she had them for me either. the time i was with them after nikkah i continued to call her aunty as it's pretty difficult to call someone 'ammi' who you know doesn't care about you. however, since my hubby has been here and we talk on the phone, i do try to. if 'aunty' slips out, it's due to habit more than anything else. my fil helped a lot, he'd always be like 'stoppit beti ka phone hai', so it was easier to call her 'ammi' when you're being referred to as beti... something they didn't do before.
i really hate it when it's forced though, i don't see the point if there is no sincerity attached to a word. like after all these years, when we're not kids any more my dad has started to tell my siblings off for not calling me baji... i don't need that, to me it doesn't show they respect me any more.
Re: How do you address your mother in law?
Yes. I have a whole stock of word AMMI ![]()

Exactly. unless you were with someone for years and had a great relationship with the MIL that calling her ammi is natural....in most cases u dont' even know how the relationship is going to be. everyone can come in with good intentions but u never know when things can go bad and then its just a hollow word.
