I plan to move to Pakistan after I’m done my university in a few years and start filmmaking in Karachi. But I don’t know where to start.
Should I make a short independent film first and submit it to Kara Film Festival or FiLums?
I know the industry is dead as of now but are any studios even considering investing in movies?
I have written many screenplays and don’t want them to go to waste.
I think kara festival is a very good source for showcasing your telefilms. as far as the industry is concerned well its dead at the moment so the chances are that you wont get any help from the studios etc. but i was just thinking maybe u could contact some of the producers yourself and explain them that you have fantastic scripts and you want to make films on them (either directing them your self or hiring someone else...well if you direct it your self it will be great as there will be less cost and since u know your scripts therefore u can visualise them better). i'll say you should contact Shoman Productions or javed jabbar for producing your film. good luck
Shorts at Kara might be a good start to get the ball rolling, but to make it into the big league find a film financier and get the actors (the film actors are currently out of work and are willing to work with anyone, but you have to market your project well), and shoot your movie and hope it'll rake in revenues. Several young independent film makers like Omar Ali Khan, Mehreen Jabbar and Bilal lashari have followed this path. The toughest bit is to find financial backing for your project. Best of luck.
Thanks for the help Stalker.
Kara Film Festival was cancelled in 2010, I hope its back up again in 2011 and it probably takes like 4-5 crore to make a movie right?
^ make friends with sangeeta saima and nirma they're going to be your future colleagues:) j/k
You're so lucky you can go back to pakistan and work there.
in showbiz, you need to make contacts with the right ppl. meet with ppl like shoaib mansoor mehreen jabbar they can guide you as they're established film makers. secondly, you need to have some producer/investor with you.

Best of luck looking forward to your movie!

Depends on your script, your cast/crew and the medium you're shooting in (35mm vs. HD). The figure you've quoted seems to be alright for an average production -- but so many different factors influence it. Work on minimizing it for your initial production.

I agree it's all about contacts in Pakistan in almost every field of work, especially in showbiz.

Most likely 35mm. My scripts don't require a big budget. But I'm only concerned about the equipment. Do any studios in Pakistan even have lighting, sound etc. I think we are still using cameras from the 70's. We still don't have a post production studio either. I hate bollywood but if you look at films like A wednesday, sankat city, those films are made with less than 4 crore rupees but the overall product has quality.
I don't understand what you mean by minimizing it for my initial production?
Hello there. What is your degree in? I can probably forward you in a better direction.
I'm pursuing a degree in Bcomm. I was going to go to film school but many people told me its a waste because if I don't make it into movies then I still have a degree which I'll at least get a good job with.
Film school is a test of patience, especially if your parents are paying for it. Even if they aren't, the indian/pakistani mind is absurd when it comes to this. Southasian lack the mentality to see beyond the amitab bachan type paindoo production movies coming out of the subcontinent.
There is no "job" waiting for you once out of film school, but man the opportunities are endless. You have to make your contacts to find work in the field. One doesn't simply start making films. I would recommend, you reach out to some of the newer film schools in Pakistan when you go back. Work with them on student projects, volunteer your time. Film making isn't expensive anymore, relatively speaking, and there is still no ceiling on how much is needed to finish a project. I once had to come up with a music video for 2400 dollars! Anything is possible.

Thanks sir I agree that making contacts are important. And its true filmmaking isn't expensive nowadays. A south Korean feature film was made with an iphone so opportunities are endless.
