How can we correct the elections process in Pakistan?

I am not the only one that has heard/read accounts of how dear family members were swindled, harassed and forced to vote for certain political parties in previous elections.

We have all heard about bus loads of poor dwellers from villages and rural areas that are brought in, paid a nominal amount and forced to vote for specific individuals.

This is how elections in Pakistan are contested and won.

What realistic and practical means is there to fix this injustice?

Does anyone have a way that can be implemented?

Re: How can we correct the elections process in Pakistan?

That is the right question!!!

and the answer is with the voters!!!

None or very few people actually take interest in vote registrations, often it is political activist normally run campaigns and help/assist and urge them to get their votes registered.

Now that was one, when it comes to election day, 60+ decides not to go for the voting and one 30+ votes... that is where the major problem lies, that is where rigging takes place...

Now what can be done by some party who promises the change, they need to train people from the constituencies ( no school or college required), have people with good name in their party, help people in registering votes, be part of their lives, and on the day, urge everyone to vote, if that is not been done, then the promises of change is no good then the promises turning Karachi into Paris.

Re: How can we correct the elections process in Pakistan?

We need USA election process to eliminate or minimize voting frauds. Candidates from different parties nominate themselves and then people decide which candidate of a party is the right one for possible future president-ship. That way, people can still elect PPP but can avoid criminals like zardari to become their presidents.

Re: How can we correct the elections process in Pakistan?

Elections should be held with protection provided by Army. The election which resulted in breakage of Pakistan in 1970 and then one in 1988 are exemplary.

Re: How can we correct the elections process in Pakistan?

Westminster democracy has failed here, it's been abused to death using politics of patronage that does not allow genuine leaders to emerge.

ONLY a Presidential system will work for Pakistan, and were it there from the start we would not have reached this stage.

Re: How can we correct the elections process in Pakistan?

FAFEN would be a useful group to work with

Re: How can we correct the elections process in Pakistan?

Education first, democracy would follow.

Re: How can we correct the elections process in Pakistan?

Education first will not work here........
what use is education when someone stands with a gun to your head telling you what to vote?

Re: How can we correct the elections process in Pakistan?

Electoral reform......wouldn't this be the first thing for a party to invest their funding in if they truly want a bright future for Pakistan?
Why does no party pledge to invest millions into this?

Re: How can we correct the elections process in Pakistan?

You have to strengthen your institutions first and have a truly independent judiciary and election commission. Only than will the election process begin to get on teh right path

Re: How can we correct the elections process in Pakistan?

This is no rocket science. Let the election process and deomcracy be continued for ever under the 1973 Constitution of Pakistan. Bad people will be ultimately screened out and less and less evils will take over in successive strictly impartial and neutral elections. Give rights to common man. Support democracy in Pakistan for God sake. Innovative methods adopted by Ayub Khan such as Basic Democray, Non Party Elections by Zia-ul-Haq and curt copy of Ayub's system, such as devolution by Musharaf had never worked and will never work in future either. Please stop exprimenting with the existance of remaining Pakistan, these expriements have already cost breakup in 1971 when more than half of Pakistan left. You don't want further breakup do you?

Re: How can we correct the elections process in Pakistan?

what if the strength of the institutions is compromised due to the corrupt political process?
can we not bring in an outside judiciary that will preside over the elections?

Re: How can we correct the elections process in Pakistan?

What do you mean by outside judiciary.

Strengthening the institutions means making them strong, accountable and free from corruption.

Re: How can we correct the elections process in Pakistan?

^ maybe she is referring to some international governing body

Re: How can we correct the elections process in Pakistan?

Elections aren't an event they are a process. Making sure the election day is safe isn't enough..the best way is that with the new reforms a relatively cleaner process will come in place. Saying that a certain degree of unfairness is inevitable in our society with a preference for incumbence etc ..

Re: How can we correct the elections process in Pakistan?

exactly.
because I don't see hope in the near term future for making the institutions free from corruption......
not until a democratically elected government is in control....and even then it will take generations to eliminate corruption completely.

Re: How can we correct the elections process in Pakistan?

education. only.

with education, people will vote logic. with education and a rational mind they will

not vote for violence (this cancels out anp, mqm and the likes)
not vote for super corruption (cancels out ppp, pml)
not for for financial criminals (cancels out top leadership of pml)
not vote for extremists sympathizers (bye bye immy k)
not vote for extremists (allah hafiz, allahs chosen mullahs party)

merit may come forth only through this.

Re: How can we correct the elections process in Pakistan?

And how do you propose to handle those that sell their votes for promise of food and shelter?

Re: How can we correct the elections process in Pakistan?

You mean UN under NATO or something???/

Re: How can we correct the elections process in Pakistan?

obviously that would not be a good choice......but some other body that is unrelated to the USA or has no interest in Pakistani politics.
