I am usually good on my calories. I track using myfitnesspal. But my macros are usually way off. I am quite a way ove my carbs and sugar allowance. My main carbs are from pita bread which I eat with salan, I dnt knw what to substitute that with which is filling. The other carb culprit is fruit! What do I do?
Re: How can I get more protein and less carbs in my diet?
don't have food that requires a carb to eat it, eg do grilled chicken and steamed veg or a salad instead.
Some fruits have less sugars than others, so eat those fruits
Re: How can I get more protein and less carbs in my diet?
The problem is I dnt feel full without the pita/tortilla bread and then I am constantly hungry and grumpy. I have given up pasta which was another must have food for me. Can't seem to let go of this
Re: How can I get more protein and less carbs in my diet?
wholemeal bread/pita or brown rice? It's a healthier option if you must have it
Use rye bread to eat your salan
Re: How can I get more protein and less carbs in my diet?
Hmm rye bread seems like an option.
I have switched to wholemeal pita but dnt like brown rice. Is there anything called brown basmati rice? I haven't found it yet
^ Yes, there is such a thing as brown basmati rice. I got it from my local desi store once and once from WholeFoods. It takes longer to cook, is kinda mushier than white rice, but it's great. I love the taste (some people don't, unfortunately). It tastes really good when I mix in veggies with it or make a pulao kinda thing. Im planning on using brown rice from now and only using white rice for biryani. Let's see how that goes with hubby :)
Re: How can I get more protein and less carbs in my diet?
Rye bread is an option. Otherwise, I would stick to good ol' roti made with a mix of medium and wholemeal flour. It's much better than pitta or normal bread in terms of carbs and you will find it more filling. For dinner, I would limit it to one small-medium roti and just as much salan as you need to finish that.
I don't eat pasta more than once a week. I love it and brown pasta takes all the fun out of it, so I never substitute with that. You just need to plan your meal ideas so that they don't involve pasta.
Small amounts of fruit are okay and better for you than snacking on other sweet things. Otherwise, you can't do better than raw veggies - keep a container of vege sticks for snacking.
You should try and have a boiled egg every day either with breakfast or lunch.
When it comes to other stuff like biscuits, chocolate, cake, you have to be REALLY strict with yourself and I would try not to eat any more than 100 calories worth of this stuff per day. So that's only like one snack size chocolate or very thin slice of cake.
With carbs in general, portion size is really important. Don't make them the bulk of your meal. It's really easy to go overboard with pasta or rice when 2/3 of the amount would be fine for the meal.
Re: How can I get more protein and less carbs in my diet?
Hmm alright lots of ideas about carbs but what about proteins? I eat egg white, chicken, beans and not much else in way of proteins.
Re: How can I get more protein and less carbs in my diet?
I don't normally post here... how about fish, quinoa, tempeh, certain nuts, cottage cheese and yoghurt (greek)?
Re: How can I get more protein and less carbs in my diet?
You can eat the whole egg, the good stuff is in the yolk and recent research suggests the cholesterol worry is a myth.
Fish!
Lentils... you don't have to have dhaal salan. My spanish friend made an amazing lentil based soupy dish with vegetables which I quite happily ate a huge plate full with only a little bread on the side.
You can snack on nuts but within a calorie allowance as they have a fair amount of fat in them as well.
Re: How can I get more protein and less carbs in my diet?
Greek yogurt has protein ![]()
I dnt like fish
stoppit do you have the recipe for the soup?
where can I get quinoa from? I check in my local stores they didn’t have any.
Also nuts are one of my binge foods so I try to avoid them as its impossible for me to portion control.
Re: How can I get more protein and less carbs in my diet?
If you live in the U.S, some states have Whole Foods or trader joe’s where you can buy organic quinoa. I’ve seen meijer carry it as well (Jewel & Dominicks too)
Cottage cheese has a lot of protein and is low in carbs. Basically cheese is a good source of protein with less carbs (just have to limit it). There are some low carb whole grain tortillas as well. You can make a wrap with that. Mashed boiled egg with veggies sprinkled with cheese. Or egg & chicken etc with that wrap.
For greek yogurt - here is what I do:
- One cup non-fat plain greek yogurt with 9 almonds and one teaspoon organic raw honey. The fat in almonds is good fat, which your body needs but again in moderation.
Try to swap roti at night with grilled chicken or salmon with veggies. Tofu is a good source of protein as well.
Additionally, sugar and carb from fruits are not totally bad unlike from other stuff. Berries are good low carb options. Banana is high on carbs and is a good pre-workout snack.

double post
Re: How can I get more protein and less carbs in my diet?
If you work out, eating cottage cheese after you work out is really good for your metabolism!
I don't eat meat so I get all my protein from quinoa, tempeh, tofu, sometimes fish etc...
If your local grocery store doesn't have quinoa, try your local health food store.. they will have it! ^Whole Foods definitely does.
lentils/legumes are good sources too.. and very filling! Lentils/beans etc are very versatile too .. so you can use them in many different recipes before you get tired of them
Re: How can I get more protein and less carbs in my diet?
Hmmna, this is what I did. I was eating way too many carbs too. Like literally in every meal I had carbs. I love rice way too much lol. So I decided to take rice to lunch and just have salad at dinner. Never worked. So, I started taking chicken and vegetable stir fry to work for lunch instead. I use Green Giant Calafornia mix frozen vegetables. I take about 1 to 1.5 cups of veggies and about 0.5-1 cup of cubed chicken. And this fills me up for good 4 hours and easily under 350 calories. I still have toast in the morning but whole wheat. And rice for dinner most of the time.
Note added: I was eating atleast 2 slices of bread everyday. I substituted that for an egg in the morning. I just have one whole wheat toast and 1 egg omelette. That's only like 200 cals. I get my protien in the morning. It keeps me energized and full for longer.
I used to eat total desi food at breakfast, lunch, dinner....Salan, roti, rice and all that. I recently found out that in addition to being overweight, I'm also carb sensitive due to which my hormones are messed up too. The Dr. told me to go low-carb. Now I eat 2 eggs with 1 whole wheat toast for breakfast. For lunch, I either make chappali kababs, steak, or some kinda meat (with very little oil) with one whole wheat roti, veggies (as
much as I want), and a fruit. For dinner, I eat a fruit, grilled chicken or fish with salad. If I need a snack, I munch on nuts, carrots, or more fruit. I do not work, stay at home, no kids, so I do a lot of unnecessary eating coz I'm bored. But after changing to this diet, I've lost 10 lbs in 5 weeks w/o any exercise and sitting on my behind everyday! HTH :)
Re: How can I get more protein and less carbs in my diet?
Get rid of some bread and eat veggies instead. Eat more lentils, daal, and white meat.
