If you have dark hair don’t you have to bleach to get a lighter colour? I’ve only dyed my hair once and it was a red colour, it came out as more red overtones on my dark brown hair but I’m pretty sure even for that to show the dye must have some sort of bleach. Also isn’t that what highlights are if your hair is darker?

Um, most of the time. I used to get my hair lighter from using boxed color and it worked just fine. After dying it black, the boxed color didn’t work anymore so now I have to bleach it first or get it stripped.
