If you have dark hair don't you have to bleach to get a lighter colour? I've only dyed my hair once and it was a red colour, it came out as more red overtones on my dark brown hair but I'm pretty sure even for that to show the dye must have some sort of bleach. Also isn't that what highlights are if your hair is darker?
It is possible to get a good tint from dye without bleaching..
The sun can also noticeably lighten some ppls hair..
Alternatives to bleach - lemon juice, beer.. I have no idea how well they work or how damaging they might be tho..
Oh I done it at home. My mum done it for me. It was very simple. We just went to salon supplies and asked for the lower bleach conc. then mum cut a bit of my hair and we tested how long the bleach should be left on for. Alhumdulillah my hair is thicker than ever and much more conditioned. If it does look a bit dry I use an intensive hair mask. Usually does the trick. Do think about it though I will say I absolutely adore my hair colour and the attempts I went through I will never get the Same colour :( lol
You could ask at whatever salon you wanna do it at. The salon I originally wanted to get it done for jut basically wanted to rob me. They wanted to strip and lift and tone and blah and blah for £150. I said cheers mate and walked out!
I wanted to get it done from a salon too but they had the same robbing intentions :( as soon as you tell them you have black hair, they tell you it needs to be bleached and will cost a lot more. I'm going to try stripping my hair to get that black die off, then maybe i'll be able to dye it brown on my own like I used to.
I myself have very dark brown/black hair and I had never dyed my hair before. So I wanted to dye my hair a dark blonde colour. So I went to Sally's Beauty Supply and bought a brown and 30 developer and it did nothing my hair, my hair was still black. And so I went back to that lady who recommended that colour and I told her how my hair was virgin and I dyed my hair with the colour but still nothing happened. So she said " maybe your hair is very strong in pigment and it wont get lifted easily". So she basically told me that I would have either Bleach or use a stripper to stripe my hair from the dark colour. So then I asked her what's more damaging? and she said bleaching is worse then stripping for the hair. And the stripper has almost the same effect as the bleach. So I went home and I was thinking if I should really dye my hair? anyway's I thought about colouring my hair that way but then I was like no, I like long hair and if it get's too damaged then I would have to get it cut, so I never did it.
btw my hair didn't get lifted from anywhere but my roots were a brassy orange colour, I don't know why that happened. Anyway's I had to live with that ugly orange roots for a while.
So Maybe try the stripper instead of the bleach since it is less damaging and gives similar results.
I think you made a good decision. I'd rather have long dark hair then short lighter hair. I had the brown root problem a couple of months ago too =/ looked terrible. And yes, after reading all these replies i'm leaning more towards stripping. (lol)

Um, most of the time. I used to get my hair lighter from using boxed color and it worked just fine. After dying it black, the boxed color didn't work anymore so now I have to bleach it first or get it stripped.
I've heard that it's really hard to go lighter once you've dyed your hair black, but I honestly wouldn't bleach if I were you.
I wanted to go lighter as well for summer, but as I have long hair that I intend on keeping healthy I wasn't about to bleach. So I just used a box dye in a few shades lighter than I actually wanted to go, it was a light ash brown colour. My hair is definitely lighter than before, nothing too drastic though which is fine by me as I have dark eyebrows. Although my natural hair colour is dark my hair is quite sensitive to the sun, so it lightens in the summer and I think it takes to dye quite well. I've dyed my hair red using a box dye in the winter and that worked pretty well on my hair as well, my hair turned an auburn colour.
^I tried that but it didn't work :(! I want to try this new product I came across called "Color Oops", it removes hair color, although i'm not sure if it'll remove black from my hair because I dyed it a few months ago, it wasn't anything recent. But so far, i've gathered most people are suggesting I don't bleach it. So i'll try Color Oops and then try boxed color and pray it shows up.
Color oops definitely works!! The first time i used it as on jet black gross hair ( dark brown hair color turned my already damaged hair black) and color oops lightened it to a medium brown beautiful shade which I was initially going for. Second time wasn't too long ago. I went to a salon to get a reddish brown hair color. I kid you not they turned my hair clownish red. Color oops once again saved me. I had the most gorgeous light reddish brown hair color. So much so that after a week of using it I went to a salon to get another color and the lady said she loved my hair color and couldn't believe how I got it. They aren't kidding when it says wash it for as long as possible, that's the most important step. The more you wash the more color comes out. Also, very important! The color changed the first 3-4 days. When you just wash it to maybe the next 2 days, it won't be as light so give it Timento adjust. As soon as I washed it off the second time, I wanted to cry because it was a really light reddish brown but by the third day it darkened a bit and didn't have a weird tinge to it like it did the first day. If you are planning to recolor, don't do it right away cause your hair will be really porous. Wait a week or so and use a protein treatment. If you go to a salon make sure you tell them what you used. If you don't do these things and decide to just put another clor on top, your hair can suck it all and turn black again (lesson learned th hard way tehee) . Oh and go for much lighter shade then you desire e.g don't use medium or light brown because your hair is porous and will suck up the color. Most important thing when recoloring specially when using a box dye: protein treatment!!! And be very careful about the color you choose. You don't want to end up where you started.
This stuff lookes pretty good, it even removes black.
and has no bleach or any harsh chemicals.
I think i’ll give it a try since it does say no harsh chem’s.

Thanks so much for the detailed reply! This sounds like a miracle product but I have a couple of concerns before I use it.
I dyed my hair jet black, then used light brown hair color on top and nothing happened, except that my roots caught the brown (which looked pretty bad). It's been about 2-3 months since, so I have a couple of inches of normal, uncolored hair that has grown out. My question is will color oops remove the brown dye or the black? or both? I hope it's strong enough to penetrate deep enough to remove the initial jet black color.
Lastly, does color oops do anything to normal, uncolored hair? I have a couple of inches of uncolored hair starting at the root and I don't want it to turn any weird color.
