I dyed my hair jet black a couple of months ago to hide the white hair that’s been sprouting out lately. After dying it, I realized I didn’t like it at all, and felt I looked much better with lighter hair so I got 2 Loreal hair color boxes from CVS. The box said this dye is specifically for darker hair, the brown color was really nice too, so I pretty excited and had high hopes. After going through the trouble of dying my hair, I wash it to find that my hair color was EXACTLY the same as it was before. It was still black, nothing had changed. After doing some research, I realized the dye didn’t work because I had previously dyed my hair black. It’s been around 3 months since the incident so i’m not sure if the black hair dye has worn out, I don’t know if any hair dye will work now.
Is there ANY WAY I can get my hair lighter without stripping/bleaching it first? My hair is pretty long so I can’t wait for all the black hair to grow out, that’ll take like 10 yrs
Is bleaching THAT bad for your hair? Instead of repeatedly dying it (which also isn't too good for your hair), should I just bleach it instead? is there anyway to get your hair back to normal condition after bleaching or not really?
I just came across a product called "Color Oops" which claims to take out hair color in 20 mins and is ammonia/bleach free! looks promising. Has anyone tried it?

Its bad. Its stripping your natural color/oil off of your hair shaft...that cannot be good. But its the only way to lift color right away.
As for repeatedly dying...well when its done over a period of time you can try to control the damage a little bit in between. Its still damage but to a little lesser degree.
It can go back but everyone's hair is different. I've bleached my hair once...and it took a while to get back to normal. My hair is curly and by default - dry. Bleach dried it out and I lost some of it. It felt like straw and I never did it again. Some peoples' hair can handle it well...they have enough hair...their hair is healthy enough to sustain some of the damage and for them its alright.
I bleached my hair about two months ago. A full head of bleach and then dyed it to get the hair colour that I actually wanted. It didn't do much damage to my hair. Even made my hair a little thicker but a little dry but nothing that can be cured with a little intensive hair cream. But I'm not advising you to bleach your hair.
Get a hair colour like blonde and it will make your hair lighter. Just don't choose a really light blonde or your hair will go ginger.
You can consider taking 3 inches off your hair length to encourage hair growth, cutting hair makes hair grow faster.
By cutting 3 inches first month
2 inches after 3rd month
and then 1 inch after the 5th month
You would have taken off 6 inches in total, but you probably would have grown back 5 inches ... making a net reduction of only 1 inch, but 6 inches of normal un-dyed hair ... from the roots.
Then if you strip the colour on the lower part of the hair that will be less damage, but you have to wait 6 months.

Thing is, I don't know if it'll get lighter because I dyed my hair jet black a couple of months ago. Shortly after that, I used a dark ash blonde color on my hair and it did nothing :( that's why bleaching seems like the only solution.

Hmm... I'm torn between bleaching it or trying "Color Oops" I naturally have an oily scalp and hair that gets oily really fast, so i'm hoping if I do end up bleaching it, the after effects won't be too bad.

That's actually pretty good advice :) Only issue is, I wanted the color change to take place before Eid. If not then, then by 1-2 months for a particular event. Don't see why I can't start trimming though, even an inch or two of normal hair would be good.

thats why i bleached it because box hair dyes were doing nothing to my hair and i was a bit nervous about bleaching but even the shop lady who's a hairdresser said it's NOT that bad but it obviously is! i did use a low concentration of ammonia though. maybe try a strand test?
You will have to repeatedly dye using a lighter color and lighten over time.
If you got Loreal Feria which is the box color intended for darker hair...return it please.
It will fry your hair...you're better off bleaching if you're using that.
With box color...the only brands I like are Garnier and John Freida.
Is Loreal Feria that bad for hair? I dyed my hair using the dark golden brown shade and I think my hair looked quite nice..but I have noticed a lot of greys since I started dying my hair. what could be the reason

Can you request bleaching with a low concentration of ammonia? I think I might do a strand test and just go for it
Oh I done it at home. My mum done it for me. It was very simple. We just went to salon supplies and asked for the lower bleach conc. then mum cut a bit of my hair and we tested how long the bleach should be left on for. Alhumdulillah my hair is thicker than ever and much more conditioned. If it does look a bit dry I use an intensive hair mask. Usually does the trick. Do think about it though I will say I absolutely adore my hair colour and the attempts I went through I will never get the Same colour :( lol
You could ask at whatever salon you wanna do it at. The salon I originally wanted to get it done for jut basically wanted to rob me. They wanted to strip and lift and tone and blah and blah for £150. I said cheers mate and walked out!
I myself have very dark brown/black hair and I had never dyed my hair before. So I wanted to dye my hair a dark blonde colour. So I went to Sally's Beauty Supply and bought a brown and 30 developer and it did nothing my hair, my hair was still black. And so I went back to that lady who recommended that colour and I told her how my hair was virgin and I dyed my hair with the colour but still nothing happened. So she said " maybe your hair is very strong in pigment and it wont get lifted easily". So she basically told me that I would have either Bleach or use a stripper to stripe my hair from the dark colour. So then I asked her what's more damaging? and she said bleaching is worse then stripping for the hair. And the stripper has almost the same effect as the bleach. So I went home and I was thinking if I should really dye my hair? anyway's I thought about colouring my hair that way but then I was like no, I like long hair and if it get's too damaged then I would have to get it cut, so I never did it.
btw my hair didn't get lifted from anywhere but my roots were a brassy orange colour, I don't know why that happened. Anyway's I had to live with that ugly orange roots for a while.
So Maybe try the stripper instead of the bleach since it is less damaging and gives similar results.
If you have dark hair don't you have to bleach to get a lighter colour? I've only dyed my hair once and it was a red colour, it came out as more red overtones on my dark brown hair but I'm pretty sure even for that to show the dye must have some sort of bleach. Also isn't that what highlights are if your hair is darker?
I wish you’d posted this before you did it Pseudo. My hair used to be thick and dark like yours. but after repeated colorings, I dyed it all black and then bleached it…that pretty much ruined my hair for good. It took 3-4 years to get back to decent shape, and even nwo I have to cut it every few months or it looks fugly.
