Let’s assume Bollywood music. Are lyrics written first, or is the music written first? How do the composer and the singer work together? Does the singer give ideas, or does the composer tell the singer how to sing? Or a little of both?
Seems like a long and tiresome process, the singer and the composer could just spend days not getting anywhere.

I have heard music is made first in bollywood
and then the words are written. Not sure though.

ive always wondered me self 
lets say when justin wants to make single with fifty cents or someone .. what happens .. who writes lyrics.. music? wat happens..

well seldom words are written for a tune already composed. usually lyrics are penned first and then are handed over to the selected musician [composer] to compose the music. composers usually have assistants who actually write the music for them and then music goes to the arranger to arrange it [which basically means which instrument will have which part of the tune]...n then after final approval of the producer/director they go into the studios to record the song. selection of the singer is normally done by the composer but producer/director can change it if they don't want that singer to sing the song.

In commercial songs, music is composed first. and then lyrics, cause its easier that way.
In fact, Veer Zara is an open example of that. Music was written many many years ago by now a dead musician
Lyrics were added later.
There are exceptions though
Ghazal singing is that exception, where already written poetry is picked and music is composed for that.

for some desi songs (cough-bollywood-cough-vital signs- cough-sajjad ali) music is stolen first and then lyrics written

VS, despite copying songs...had some really nice original ones aswell like chehra, musafir, ajnabi, hum rahay rahi, yariyan, etc. sajjad ali n bollywood i don't care much.

excellent band, among my fav Pakistani bands, but they dinn come clean about their thievery..that was disappointing.
ajnabi is a fantastic song, humtum, aitebaar, teray liye etc..

Vs, in thier first album had one song where the lyrics were a poetry of Parveen Shakir. I think that was Cheraa..

its a looooooong process in hollywood movies.
two types of musics are there (besides dialog, and sound effects): score and sound scape
it is created by composer, recorded at studio session and then edited by editor.
music is made after the picture is shoot, edited, locked, and dialogues are recorded.

Pakistan's national Anthem's lyrics were written in 1954 by Abu Al Asar Hafeez Jalandhri while it's music was composed in 1950 by Ahmed Ghulam Ali Chagla.

After the event of Pakistan becmoing Pakistan (Pvt.) Ltd. ironically and sadfully, everything in Pakistan is commercial. But in anyway, I was simply giving a supportive comment to TLK's post ;-)

yeah...it was chehra by PS and dil dil pakistan was written by nisar nasik [sp]...rest were by shoaib mansoor.
UKAJ, national anthem is not a commercial bolly-lolly-tolly-jolly-dolly-polly-hollywood gana so that can not be considered as a supportive example or comment. from wht i've seen [and this applies to lollywood only] lyrics are penned first according to the situation and then music is composed. in certain cases poet alters the already written lyrics to fit the movie situation. to use already composed music or tunes for movies is not something producers / directors like unless its an out-of-this-world tune. two songs that i can think of are dekha jo chehra tera [ghonghat] and karan main nazara [chooriyan or nikki jaye han] were written to an already composed tune. the music was originally composed for movies which were never completed and thus music was never used.

neither do I consider it as a supportive comment. My point was to merely show that such is not exclusive for commercialism but sadly interpreted otherwise. Hence, being a true pakistani, I just did some 'ji huzoori'. Is that bad?
