I had the occassion to spend two nights in a major Karachi hospital when Noor was just under 24 months old and suffering from nausea and dehydration.
It was the worst 48 hours that I have spent in a medical facility.
The hygiene was abominable. The toilet in every room was filthy and don’t even ask about the one in the general ward.
The bedside manner of all attending was rude at best. It was as if we had caused them such difficulty by becoming sick!
On the morning of the day we were to be released I stopped one of the doctors doing rounds and, in the most Canadian accent I could muster, asked if there was a formal process for filing a complaint about the treatment we had received there. I told him that I was born in this country and was ashamed that the people here were being mistreated and abused by those whose duty and obligation it was to heal them.
He showed genuine concern and asked one of the nurses that were with him to get him a writing pad and pen. He asked me to write down my grievances and describe my experience. Ironically the nurse that was asked to do this was one of those that I needed to complain about.
I had a follow up appointment two weeks later in which the attending doctor, not the one that did the rounds, examined my daughter and then went on to mention casually that, “Did you know that two nurses were fired from their positions as a result of your complaint?” Her tone was one of resentment; as if I had been the cause of someone being without a job. I told her that I was sorry to hear of it but obviously the administrating body of the hospital agreed with me on how paitents should be treated.
thats horrible muzna, sorry for your bad experience, thats what i mean though. a lot of the doctors and nurses come across as really arrogant, completely cold. and if you dare complain about them they think you’re evil! Every hospital should put their patients first, i havent seen it in pakistan though :(.
