Re: Honeymoon Destinations and Personal Reviews
For those of you who went for a Honeymoon outside of Pakland, or even within, where did you go?
How much did it cost?
Would you recommend it?
What are the do's and don'ts when planning for one outside of the country and within?
How much extra cash should be taken along?
How long is an ideal honeymoon?
What travel agent did you use if any?
Basically haven't thought about this aspect of it at all. Was wondering if you people were willing to share experiences and recommend spots.
We took three and a half weeks and road tripped across Europe. Flew to Paris, rented a car, and then drove across to Hungary and Romania to see hubby's family. Our route was Paris > Strasbourg (incredible, massive cathedral) > Heidelburg (Dad had asked us to check it out as he had done many years ago on his cross-Europe backpacking trip) > Nuremburg > Plzen (in Czech. Stayed in a 400 year old monastery converted to a hotel! it was amazing.) > Prague > Budapest > Romania (Monostor, specifically. A very quaint little mountain village where hubby's grandparent's are from) > Pecs (went specifically to check out a mosque built by the Turks in the 1100's that was converted to a church and then became a mosque and then back to a church- very cool interior with the Qiblah still marked, Turkish design with the dome and blue and white tiles, and kalma's still inscribed on the walls even though it now functions as a church) > Graz (Austria. Stayed in the cutest hotel ever (Harry's Hotel Home, and had the BEST creme brulée here.) > Venice > Milan > Cinque Terre > Geneva (stopped here for coffee and tiramisu on our way to Paris for the night) > Paris > back home.
Paris was magnificent. I know it seems cliché because everyone always talks about it and you see it in movies etc, but it truly is amazing. Everyone needs to go to Paris at least once in their lives, imo. We loved it and we loved Versailles. Even just walking around the neighborhoods at night was so lovely. I can't wait to go back!
It was pretty freakin' fantastic as far as honeymoons go. We saw so much and did so much- it was invigorating. Obviously not for those who want to lounge on a beach all day (although we did that in the Cinque Terre so I suppose you could plan your route so you do hit some beaches (south of France and south of Italy along the Amalfi coast come to mind). I would highly, highly, highly recommend it.
Do's and Don'ts- Do make sure you have all your travel documents and visa's sorted (obviously). Do be adventurous! It really is an amazing time with just you and the hubby and the future all stretched out shiny and bright masha'Allah. Cash-wise, we honestly didn't carry much. Everywhere we went, we either withdrew what was needed, or we used our credit cards. Everyone will accept a Visa although MC can be a bit hard to find.
I could have been on honeymoon for a few months, to be honest, but for the kind of trip we did 3.5 weeks was perfect. We weren't rushed and we were able to time it so that we could spend more days in a particular place if we felt like it, and we did when we got to Graz because we loved it so much. If you are planning a trip like this, don't be too itinerary-driven. Play it by ear. We had our laptop with us and we'd drive around when we got to a new city, we'd usually find someone's internet connection to hop on to, and book a hotel online there and then (booking.com, hotels.com and venere.com were our mainstays), or we'd find a coffee shop with free wi-fi and do so. We were never stuck for a place to stay and we could pick our neighborhood rather than booking sight unseen.
We bought our tickets from Expedia and arranged a rental car from them too as well as first couple of night's hotel in Paris.
Cost was in the neighborhood of 10 grand but it was well worth every penny.
