Oh this is my hobby, I have allways decorated my ammi's place and recently I am doing it in my own place. Maybe it will help if I give u some of my own decoration ideas and tips, that I have collected (sometimes even watching the room decorating shows on bbc prime).

The main thing to remember is "less is more" if you are decorating a room, don't over do it. First of all choose a colour scheme for that room, I would say not more the 2 or 3 colours in a room, eg. if you like sky blue, the the best suiting colour could be off while and purple, red or pink with cream, orange with white and yellow, green with light blue and white. Then you could go shopping keeping in mind the colours that u will use, don't buy something totally out of the colour scheme, even if its something that u totally love, as even the slight colour disorder can ruin the whole room. I personally like light colours than dark and too bright colours. Light colours gives the room the touch of peace and hormony, dark colour can make the room look smaller then it really is.

After you have bought the furniture, then you can begin to decorate with the smaller things/ithems, for the walls, you may use wall hangings, painting, I think more then 2 paintings in a room is too much, some walls can remain untouchted. Room green plants are also nice, but its a pain to maintain them, especially in winter, as they need lots of sun. As for last decoration tips, get some decorating small ithem like vases, candles (with the matching colours of the room) and place them at the places that seem empty as to give the whole room a finishing touch.

lol! I would love too, in return I get to spends some days in that lovely city of yours, so who can refuse such an offer. :)

Its a deal then. Come and do my place up and I'll take you for a girls night out on the town and bag ourselves a couple of old millionaires with chronic heart conditions.

Couple of things to keep in mind

1- what look are you going for..how long will you have that look? modern/ mid century modern.. the whole barcelona chair, mies chaise, contemporary, classic- victorian-british raj, shaker

2- how sure are you that you will stick with the colour scheme for some time.

3- what can you doa nd what can't you do i.e. if you are in a rental you cant paint the walls or change the flooring.

4- how much do you want to spend

light blue and pink may be fine for now, but how long can you deal with it. Additionally, you are the one doing all this decorating, you should involve your husband as much as possible.

I have seen couples' living rooms where the lady in the household has turned the living room into a pastel floral hell and the poor guys just lives with it :)

How soon do you want your place completely done..and how picky are you. Some people are very content with the limited selections available at mainstream stores.. others are very picky.

Shahreen, ooh that sounds promising, but what will we do with our men ;)

They can stay at home and watch the paint dry.

Light blue and pink are not totally girly colours, I know what men think, they are obsessed with darker shades, especially navy blue and black, which gives a cooler feeling, but being in a norther european country Mehroo should go with warmer colours/shades as she will see and have enough of the cold feeling when looking outside the window, these cool colours might be good for warmer mediterrian places but not for northern european places. Light blue and pink with addition to some other colours, that I mentioned above can make a really good combination with which both, wife and husband can live with.

As for the style of the room, it should be something 'neutral', I would say classic or modern, as the same look can get boring with time and with the neutral look you can easly change the style of the room with some simple handgriffs, eg. if you have leather creme sofas and carpet, then you can make from one of the following colour:red/pink/purple/sky blue/yelow/peach/green, curtains with decorations and lets say in two years you may get another colour combination, (just change the curtains and decorations) but with one style direction, then its difficult to be so flexible.
