In my case, I always try to give something impersonal / neutral - e.g. if I know the guy likes coffee, get him a Tims/Starbucks mug and a $25 gift card for coffee ; for someone who’s into sports, a desktop decor item pertaining to the game etc.
Boring may be - but it’s something that works with many people.
