Holiday Gift for Guy boss

My former boss and I who was woman always exchanged gifts for the holidays. She always got something very thoughtful . But I am stumped what to get my new boss?

What to get a Guy boss for the holidays?

  • should I even get him anything?

something that gets me promoted in the next year

If intention is promotion, buy him a mini cooper.

Re: Holiday Gift for Guy boss

are we just talking goods or also services?

Re: Holiday Gift for Guy boss

^ he is a GIANT - he won't fit in mini cooper. If I had extra money lying around to dole out mini coopers I wouldn't need a promotion.

He is

Ex military guy

use to be on a sub

has 2 kids, no pets

I hope you are talking about buying services because I don’t do that anymore :snooty:

?

An ex navy guy would love to have a model of a sub, specially if made of gold and decorated with a few diamonds. On a side note, promotions are not won with a slice of a pie.

Re: Holiday Gift for Guy boss

Get him one of these flip chart thingy’s to keep on his desk… this is the one Mr Maroush has on his desk

Some phrases from it:

Teamwork means never having to take all the blame yourself.

If at first you don’t succeed, delegate the job to someone else.

The light at the end of the tunnel has been turned off due to budget cuts.

Who says nothing is impossible, there are people here who do it everyday.

If you are not part of the solution, you are probably a manager.

I don’t look busy because I did it right the first time.

Re: Holiday Gift for Guy boss

Aalie - Shopping for guys is so hard. Now where would I find a sub. I can find a toy one in toys r us. But don't you think that's a little personal?

What can I get at the mall for $50 that says "happy holidays" and "promote me" in a professional way

Re: Holiday Gift for Guy boss

Oh, ex-military you say…:hmmm:

If i was your manager, i would promote the person who bought me a model version of a MiG 29 to put on my desk.

:smack: you dont manufacture goods either.
if he is into something, get him a service/experience rather than a good. baseball tix, concert tix, golf lesson, massage session (not by you!!)

etc

Re: Holiday Gift for Guy boss

Maroush - where would I get that. And don't you think that something his WIFE should get him.

Can I just bake him brownies or get him a gift cerfiticate to get his shoes shined

you are a boss right? what do your reportees get for you?

Re: Holiday Gift for Guy boss

nothing :( they hate me

I have always set the precedence that for holiday stuff, just bring some treats for the team instead of for me.

Re: Holiday Gift for Guy boss

Do you have such terms where you exchange gifts? If not then dont do that. If you have to give, then a basket of home baked cookies is the best one.

Seriously - I rather get him nothing.

I don't know him that well and it makes me really uncomfortable to give gifts to people I don't know.

Would it be unapproriate to get my old boss something and not get him anything? Or I am overthinking this and these things don't matter to guys right?

Re: Holiday Gift for Guy boss

here is a recent article u may refer to
Think twice before giving the boss a gift - Careers- msnbc.com

TLK - he's a new boss so I don't know him well.

But I know HIS boss really well. Not only does she gets stuff for me but also for my girls.

So is it unappropriate for me to give gifts to everyone (around him) except him?

Re: Holiday Gift for Guy boss

Interesting article.

Re: Holiday Gift for Guy boss

two years ago we got our boss a GPS cuz he had mentioned that he was in the market for one......he loved it.

last year he started hinting and dropping comments like "I wonder what I will get for Christmas this year..." Obviously this ticked a few people off who saw the hinting to be in poor taste and it was decided that we would go through a charity and chip in to purchase a "donkey" for a village on his behalf.........he was not very happy with that.

this year more people are unhappy with how he has handled things and he has begun his hinting again.........

what to do....?
