Pakistanis do it with goals in second half
Pakistan rode on their experience to take them to a 2-0 victory over Belgium in a Group B match of the Olympic hockey qualifying tournament here yesterday.
Belgium played a defensive first half, using their well-organised deep four of Cedric Degreve in goal and fullbacks Thierry Renaer, Gilles Petre and Marc Caudron to keep Pakistan outside their D.
Pakistan held most of the possession in the first half and gained four penalty corners but they all came to nought.
Degreve stopped two attempts by Sohail Abbas, who also saw to of his flicks deflected away by the runner.
After the break, Pakistan missed an open goal when Mudassar Ali Khan drew out Degreve and passed the ball to Shakeel Abbasi for an unchallenged shot. But Shakeel drove the ball wide.
But Pakistan were not to be denied a goal. Sohail aided the conversion of Pakistan’s fifth penalty corner in the 51st minute. He pushed the ball low and slow for Kashif Jawad to swoop in to deflect the pass into goal.
Muhammad Saqlain went on target in the 62nd minute, finishing an exchange of four short passes with Muhammad Nadeem with a flick to the right of Degreve’s goal.
“We were patient today and should have scored in the first half,” said Pakistan’s coach Roelant Oltmans.
“But we kept our confidence and talked about how to get the penalty corner variation working and you saw us score from it in the second half.
“I am happy with the overall performance of the team and it is a good start to have full points from two matches.”
Pakistan, who beat Canada 4-2 in their opening match on Tuesday, will play against India tomorrow.
“The boys know what we want from them but sometimes emotions get in the way. It will be interesting to see how they deal with the emotions in the match against India,” said Oltmans.
