Hockey, Qualifying tournament for Olympics

The Hockey fever never seems to cool down. Pakistan are set to play 2-Test series against Spain and Holland. Should be an opportunity for Green Shirts to build up confidence before playing Olympics qualifying round.

Pakistan to play two Tests

LAHORE, Jan 28: **Pakistan hockey team will play two Test, one each against Holland and Spain before taking part in the Olympics qualifying round to be held in Madrid, Spain on March 2-13. **

Both the Tests will be played in Spain. A Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) spokesman said on Wednesday that the Federation was trying to get one more Test added to its itinerary whether against Spain or Holland and a request in this connection had been sent to both the countries.

Their reply is being awaited, he added. Pakistan team will resume training at the camp at Natio-nal Hockey Stadium on Feb 4 and will leave for Spain on Feb 22.

This will be a good preparation before the olympic qualification rounds. The recent tournament in Malaysia where Pakistan were the runner ups also put the team in the right spirit.

Can't remember Pakistan ever having to go through qualifying tournament for the Olympics - never thought it would come to this. Let's hope we make it to Athens.

Oltmans’ service to Pakistan Hockey have began to show its color. Good to have old warrior Sarwar back on the scene. Pakistan needs experience players on the front court.

Spain declined not to play Test series with Pakistan, according to the coach. Pakistan will play Two Test Series, each against Great Britain and The Netherlands

Coach Oltmans recalls Sarwar

LAHORE, Feb 4: Discarded forward Mohammad Sarwar, who was forced to quit by the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF), returned to national hockey when he reported for training camp on coach’s invitation.

**“I am satisfied with Sarwar’s level of physical fitness and I will watch him for couple of days before deciding whether he should be in the camp,” ** coach Roelant Oltmans told reporters after supervising training camp which started on Wednesday.

Sarwar had skipped national trials for the Azlan Shah last year citing domestic problems as the reason after being criticized by the national selectors for decline in his form.

Chief selector Akhtar Rasool had stated Sarwar had not been invited for the Azlan Shah Cup, while the right-in contradicted him, claiming he had chosen to stay away from the camp because of some domestic problems.

Sarwar was finally shown the door by the national selectors soon after the trials for last year’s Amstelveen Champions Trophy, forcing him to call it a day.

The former captain had severly criticized PHF for giving him harsh treatment and alleged that Akhtar and selector Hassan Sardar were behind his humiliating ouster. The selectors had contended Sarwar should quit because he had gone down the hill but surprisingly opted to have ageing goalkeeper Ahmad Alam in the squad.

**Oltmans said Sarwar was a skilful player and looked fit as compared to other players which prompted him to invite him for the the camp overruling selection committee’s decision. However, he added, Sarwar was not a part of the camp and he had been called up to check his fitness and worth for the camp set up here for Olympic qualifying round in Madrid, Spain, from March 2 to 13.

Sarwar said after being officially asked by Oltmans to join the camp, he had decided to come out of retirement which was forced upon him by the PHF. **

Oltmans defended his decision of giving a chance to upcoming goalkeeper Salman Akbar in the final against Australia in the Azlan Shah Cup which Pakistan lost 4-3.

“If Salman conceded four goals in the final, he also saved three goals despite playing in a pressure situation,” the Dutchman said.

He admitted the team should not rely on penalty corner specialist Sohail Abbas since it was important to score through field efforts. But he added Sohail’s was a gift to Pakistan. Many teams like the Netherlands and Germany had been winning due to penalty corner specialists, he said.

The coach said he would like to improve the attack of his side. “The guys also lacked possession. If Pakistan remove these flaws, no one can defeat them.”

He was satisfied on the improvement in defence during the Azlan Shah Cup which, he said, was also pointed out by few other experts in Malaysia.

Oltmans said Mohammad Saqlain and Rehan Butt had remarkably improved, while 21 probables attending the camp were also fit.

“They showed 25 per cent improvement in their fitness level and I believe they followed the fitness chart which I gave them after the Azlan Shah Cup,” he said.

He considered Australia and South Korea as the super fit sides of the Azlan Shah Cup.

Pakistan would play a Test each against the Great Britain and the Netherlands in Spain before participating in the qualifying round, while Spain had refused to play a Test, he said. Meanwhile, all 21 probables reported to the camp on the first day against the past practice of coming couple of days late.

**Pakistan: Team for Olympics to be picked from Madrid-bound squad **](http://www.planetfieldhockey.com/PFH/Item-View-11578)

KARACHI: Pakistan’s 18-member squad for the next month’s Olympic Qualifiers in Madrid will “almost” be the same team that will represent the country in this summer’s Olympic Games in Athens, a top Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) official said on Sunday.

“We are unlikely to make many changes to the squad after finalising the team for Madrid so more or less the same players will go on to compete in the Olympic Games,” said PHF secretary Brigadier (retd) Musarratullah Khan while talking to this correspondent on telephone from Lahore.

Pakistan are scheduled to announce their 18-member squad for the Olympic Qualifiers in Lahore on February 18. The 12-team Olympic Qualifiers will be held from March 2 to 13 with the top seven teams making the cut for this August’s Athens Olympics.

According to the PHF, the biggest change Pakistan will make in the squad for the Athens Games is to cut down the squad to 16 from 18 because a participating country can only field 16 players for the Olympic Games while a team can have a maximum of 18 players for most international competitions including the Olympic Qualifiers.

Musarrat pointed out that Pakistan have experimented with different combinations in recent events including this January’s Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Kuala Lumpur and now was the time to come out with a team for the Olympic Games.

“We want to finalse our team for Athens well ahead of the Games in order to give the players ample time to get ready for the tough challenge.” It is because of this reason that the national team management, the selection and the PHF top brass are taking the selection of the Madrid-bound squad very seriously.

On Sunday, officials of the federation, selection committee and the team management had an extensive meeting at the National Hockey Stadium in Lahore with a one-point agenda: Select the best possible combination for the Madrid qualifiers.

“We had e very useful meeting and all of us shared our ideas about the composition of the Pakistan team for the Olympic Qualifiers,” said Musarrat. The meeting was held after an exhibition match between the Pakistan team probables and a veterans eleven which the current players won with an enviable ease.

Musarrat said that the PHF will take a couple of more days before announcing the team for Madrid. He said that the team will only be finalised after getting full-fledged input from the team management and the selection committee which will then go for approval of PHF President General Aziz Khan.

Pakistan are scheduled to leave for Madrid on February 23 and will play warm-up matches against Holland and Spain before taking on Canada in their opening match of the Olympic Qualifiers. Pakistan’s group also includes Asia Cup champions India, Malaysia, New Zealand and Belgium.

Sarwar’s back. Vive La Oltmans.

Sarwar back in favour thanks to Oltmans

LAHORE, Feb 17: Pakistan hockey head coach Roelant Oltmans has succeeded in having inside-right Muhammad Sarwar get into the 18- member team announced on Monday for Olympic qualifying round to be held at Madrid, Spain from March 2 to 13.

**Sarwar had decided to quit international hockey after he was denied a chance to play Champions Trophy last year and said at the time that he was doing so on the selectors’ advice.

Oltmans had surprised everyone when he called up Sarwar for the national training camp for Madrid, which started on Feb 4, and later succeeded in getting approval from PHF for his inclusion in the camp.** The team was picked from 22 probables.

Besides Qasim who was replaced by Sarwar, Sameer Husain (HBL), Abdul Aasim Khan (NBP) and Nasir Ahmad (Sindh) were dropped. In a related development, PHF once again named Col Muhammad Yousuf Baig as manager of the team, a post which the federation had abolished after it hired the services of Oltmans in December last. Yousuf had earlier been performing as doctor for the camp.

Pakistan will play a Test match against Britain on Feb 25 and face Holland on Feb 28 before it leaves for Madrid.

  • Team: Muhammad Nadeem (captain), Ahmad Alam, Salman Akbar (goalkeepers), Ali Raza, Sohail Abbas, Zeeshan Ashraf, Ghazanfar Ali, Muhammad Saqlain, Dilawar Husain, Wasim Ahmad, Adnan Maqsood, Rehan Butt, Mudassar Ali Khan, Kashif Jawwad, Shabbir Husain, Shakil Abbasi, Muhammad Sarwar, Salim Khalid.

**Pakistan off to Spain in search of Olympic hockey berth **](http://www.planetfieldhockey.com/PFH/Item-View-11668)

Pakistan field hockey captain Mohammed Nadeem is confident his side can book their place at this summer’s Athens Olympics with victory in next week’s qualifying tournament in Madrid.
Pakistan, three-time Olympic gold medallists and four-time world champions, have slumped desperately over the past three years and have failed to win a major title anywhere.

They finished their worst ever fourth in the 2002 Asian Games in Busan, South Korea and also failed to win the Asia Cup last year.

But Nadeem believes Pakistan’s runners-up finish in the prestigious Sultan Azlan Shah tournament in Malaysia last month bodes well for the March 2-13 Olympic qualifiying campaign.

“We are well prepared and with our runners-up finish at the Azlan Shah hockey event last month I feel we are on track for winning the Olympic qualifying event,” Nadeem said as Pakistan left here Monday.

“Whatever has happened is behind us and with a new coach we have shown signs of improvement and will do our best to regain our Olympic title,” said Nadeem, an inspirational forward.

The top six teams at Madrid will earn a berth for the Olympics in August.

The 12th team at the Olympics will either be the seventh qualifier, or Greece who have appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to get an Olympic berth as hosts.

Five teams have already qualified for the Athens Olympics on account of winning the continental championships with South Korea as Asian champions, Australia as Oceania champions, Argentina (Americas), Germany (Europe) and Egypt (Africa).

Pakistan is pitted alongside arch-rival India, Malaysia, New Zealand, Belgium and Canada while reigning Olympic champions the Netherlands, Great Britain, Spain, Japan, South Africa and Poland are in the other group.

Former captain Mohammad Sarwar, recalled in the squad, and Adnan Maqsood would travel to Spain later in couple of days due to visa problems.

Pakistan team: Muhammad Nadeem (captain), Ahmed Alam, Salman Akbar, Ali Raza, Sohail Abbas, Zeeshan Ashraf, Ghazanfar Ali, Muhammad Saqlain, Dilawar Husain, Wasim Ahmed, Adnan Maqsood, Rehan Butt, Mudassar Ali Khan, Kashif Jawwad, Shabbir Husain, Shakil Abbasi, Muhammad Sarwar, Salim Khalid.

PAKISTAN HAS BEATEN CANADA IN THEIR
FIRST MATCH
Pakistan has beaten Canada in their first match after a great second half .
Sohail Abbas, who had failed a stroke in the first half, opened the score in
the second minute in a penalty-corner. Kashif Jawwad got the second two
minutes finishing a counter attack 2-0. The Asian superiority was clear, so
Abbas scored his second (3-0) in another penalty-corner. The 4-0 was
made by Shakeel Abbasi after a dribbling two defenses. The reaction came
too late and Canada pluck up to courage and scored their goals in the lasts
minutes. Ken Pereira and Paul Wettlauter closed the score 4-2 in the
minutes 33 and 34.

What happened with the side-match against Britain and Holland? The title needs to be Olympic Qualifying Round. It's Test series no more. :)

Pakistan wary of unfancied Belgium

From Khalid Hussain

MADRID, Spain: Pakistan will be wary of Belgium’s tight defense and improved attack when they take on the unfancied Europeans in the Olympic Hockey Qualifiers here at the Club de Campo on Thursday (today).

After having watched the Belgians recording an upset 1-1 draw against India the other day, Pakistani officials are well aware that their team cannot take victory for granted against Belgium who appear to be a far better side than their lowly 14th rank in the world might suggest.

“It is certainly an important game for us and we will be taking it very seriously,” said Pakistan¥s Dutch coach Roelant Oltmans.

Pakistan¥s confidence has rocketed after an impressive 4-2 victory over Canada in their tournament opener but Oltmans has warned his boys against the sort of complacency that caused them to concede two last minute goals against Canada.

The greenshirts are aiming to grab full victory points from the match, something that will further boost their chances of confirming a place in the semi-finals and get an automatic berth for the Olympic Games in Athens this summer. According to tournament rules, the top two teams from each group qualify for the Olympics while the remaining teams will have to battle it out for the other three spots in the play-offs. But assistant coach Tahir Zaman said that beating Belgium would not be an easy task.

“Even lower ranked European teams like Belgium can be very dangerous opponents on their day, something that was proved in the drawn match against India. We will have to come out with a different strategy to tackle the Belgians,” said Tahir, a former Pakistan skipper who has extensively played club hockey in several European countries including Belgium during the last few years.

Tahir refrained from speaking in detail on what sort of strategy the team management has devised for the game against Belgium though he said that it will be aimed at tearing apart the rock solid Belgian defense with the help of a more attacking approach.

The Pakistani attack rated as one of the best in this 12-nation competition is likely to get a boost as chances are bright that former Pakistan skipper Mohammad Sarwar will be included in the playing squad of 16 for Thursday¥s game.

Sarwar sat out the match against Canada after only reaching Madrid a day before the start of the competition on March 2. But since then he has attended two of the team¥s training sessions and is rapidly finding back his rhythm.

Oltmans said that he wants Sarwar in the final 16 for the match but will only decide about his inclusion hours before the match.

Thursday’s matches: Pakistan v Belgium 2:00 pm; India v Malaysia 4:00 pm; Canada v New Zealand 6:00 pm.

Enjoy.

No score at half time.

Half time: PAK frustrated by the disiplined 11 man BEL defence. Credit to BEL however as they managed to cleanly tackle PAK when they were under significant pressure. PC count: BEL 0 PAK 3.

Currently Pakistan playing Belgium..

Half time score 0-0

Pakisatn got some 4 penelty corners and on all occssions Sohail Abbass couldnt give it a full force. I hope he is not out of form because when he is, he misses penalty corenrs like anything. But when he is in form, like Azlan Shah, he scores at every avlbl oppurtunity. And for our olympic chances he needs to stay in form most of the time

Pakistan leading 2-0 with seven minutes remaining
