It seems your national self esteem is completely predicated on competition wiht a nation 1/10th your size population wise,,, ahhahahah
how utterly pathetic. This would be akin to the US defeating Canada in basketball or football and then the entire country celebrating, absolutely unthinkable,, or is it not true?

This must be the most illogical, irrational and nonsensical logic/analogy I have heard on Gupshup(and I have heard quite a few).
Its gratifying to note that some of my Pakistani friends here also see it the same way.

I couldn't have summed it better myself :). On second thoughts, I think all is not lost in this match against BD. I think Pak can still win. What is interesting though, is Pak is making heavy weather of a team like BD.

Did anyone see that coming? Man, the Aussies had a tough and solid defence today. They never let Argentina to play freely. Though, there were a lot of penetration from the Argentinians side, grabbed couple of penalty corners but some of them were wasted.
Aussies were in control of the game. First they led the game by 2 goals to none. After that, they kept the possession of the ball in their court among the full-backs. The pressure was on Argentina. They tried everything possible to break the ice but just couldn't do it. When the pace of the game became slow, Aussies charged up, couterattacks and beautiful passes came one after the another and the reason why Aussies scored 6 goals in the 2nd half is they never relaxed.
With this win, Aussies will play for Gold Medal against the Netherlands and Pakistan and India will meet again for the Bronze Medal. Oh Boyyyyyy........here we go again...........Emotions runs high......Must Win Or Die........
As expected, the unbeaten Netherlands thrashed Germany. This is the only game of the tournament where the opposition side could not score a single damn goal. sigh the great team of Germany faced such humiliation. Their Coach is guilty.
The Netherlands are in the greatest form ever and will defend their Champions Trophy title against the Aussies. Germany will play for 5th/6th position against Argentina. Whoever lost it, you won't see that team coming back in the '04 Champions Trophy tournament. I think that's how the policy of Champions Trophy goes. Last year South Korea came in 6th position and they aren't in this year's tournament.
I thought the top 6 teams of the world cup take part in champions trophy. Actually top 5 and the hosts but normally the hosts are in the top 5 so the 6th team sneaks in. I dont know if they have some kind of point system to rank teams or is it just the world cup standings that carry on until the next world cup or however they do it. Does someone have any information about the ranking system in field hockey???
LM last World Cup '02 was held in Malaysia. Pakistan came in 5th position.
Here's the ranking of WC 02:
Germany
Australia
Holland
South Korea
Pakistan
Argentina
England
Malaysia
New Zealand
India
Spain
Japan
South Africa
Belgium
Poland
Cuba
Hockey World Cup procedure is same as of Cricket and Football as it comes 4-year gap. I think to qualify for the Champions Trophy you have to be at least in top 5 position as of World Ranking. I could be wrong as I don't have much knowledge of it, though, I've never heard Pakistan played a match to justified its position to play in major tournaments like most of the World Hockey teams do. South Korea comes in World's top 6 teams in '02 World Cup but they are not in the 25th Men's Champions Trophy. So I guess whoever lose the 5th place match, either could not participate in the next year Champions Trophy or maybe they have to play some pre-match to justified their credibility/position as a team.
