Hizb ut-Tahrir wanted Egypt-like uprising in Pakistan: Report
Islamabad, Jul 25 (PTI)

Banned radical outfit Hizb ut-Tahrir (HuT) had planned an Egypt-like uprising in Pakistan by roping in like-minded elements in the powerful military, just days before the army detained certain senior officers in May for links with the group, a media report said today.

Correspondence between Punjab Police, the Inter-Services Intelligence and the federal government in April contained a “clear warning” about the HuT attempting a “deep infiltration” of the military and academia, this year, The Express Tribune newspaper reported today.

A letter from intelligence agencies to law enforcement agencies said HuT was working on a plan for an uprising in Pakistan similar to the ones in Tunisia and Egypt earlier this year.

“They wanted an Arab spring in Pakistan,” said an official familiar with the letter.
Wary of the HuT’s burgeoning network and in an apparent early warning about the group’s growing influence, the Crime Investigation Department of police called for “appropriate” steps to control the group that wants to establish a caliphate in Pakistan by overthrowing the elected government, the report said.

“All were forewarned about what was coming,” an unnamed official was quoted as saying by the daily.

The Pakistan Army detained Brig Ali Khan, who was serving as director for rules and regulations at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi, in May for alleged links with HuT.

The army has also confirmed it is questioning four majors for their alleged links with the banned group.

The detention of Khan and the four majors came after months of correspondence between various law enforcement and intelligence agencies that hinted at the suspicious activities of HuT activists and their possible collaboration with military personnel, particularly in Punjab, The Express Tribune reported.

The five officers are still in the army’s custody and might face court martial for 'inciting fellow officers for a mutiny", the report said.

The letter from intelligence agencies urged law enforcement officials to take “preventive or pre-emptive measures” to avert any untoward incident and to make efforts to “identify and apprehend the miscreants before they succeed in their nefarious designs”. HuT has regularly been distributing pamphlets and leaflets in middle and upper-middle class residential areas of Pakistan’s large cities.

This activity gained momentum after the successful uprising in Tunisia.
In its pamphlets, HuT specifically addressed the armed forces, urging military personnel and the public, especially the youth, to make concerted efforts to get rid of the government, while citing the example of Tunisia.

The pamphlets sought to use growing anti-American sentiments, inciting people against what HuT described as “pro-American” generals who it said had engaged a “Muslim” army in a war with their brothers in the tribal areas at the behest of the US.

Shortly after the US raid that killed Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad on May 2, the HuT distributed pamphlets in military cantonments that called on army officers to establish an Islamic caliphate.

Intelligence agencies have warned that HuT is trying to mobilise public opinion in favour of establishing a caliphate in Pakistan by overthrowing the government.
As a first step towards the proposed revolution, the group wants to have an Arab-style uprising that would have the support of the armed forces.

If the HuT cannot get generals to support its plans at the institutional level, it would seek officers who were supportive of its ideology to carry out its mission in an individual capacity, The Express Tribune reported.

After the arrest of serving army officers for their alleged links with HuT, the government detained some office-bearers of the banned group.

HuT has launched a campaign for the release of these detained activists, with posters seen on walls in different parts of Islamabad condemning the arrests

Ya! Allah Pakistan ki hifazat farma. Ameen

Re: Hizb ut-Tahrir wanted Egypt-like uprising in Pakistan

how does changing the corrupt regime mean more chaos and war all over the world???

Pakistan needs change it needs a revolution because the current system has failed. Unless you think the current system is working and not run by a gang of thieves???

Re: Hizb ut-Tahrir wanted Egypt-like uprising in Pakistan

Better chaos than endemic corruption. I don't agree with HuT's platform, however they are better than the corrupt status quo.

Re: Hizb ut-Tahrir wanted Egypt-like uprising in Pakistan

I would take thieves any day over mullahs.

Re: Hizb ut-Tahrir wanted Egypt-like uprising in Pakistan

Thn let them contest election & come to power. You can't gain legitimacy by illegally seizing power.

Re: Hizb ut-Tahrir wanted Egypt-like uprising in Pakistan

True, however the charade of switching between PPP and PML-N can hardly be classified as a legitimate method of coming to power. Vested interest, corruption and other factors inhibit the rise of an alternative. So its better to throw out the chess board rather than playing the game. Btw, this statement just doesn't apply to HuT but for any reasonably clean party/group -- we cannot afford to continue with the current set up.

Re: Hizb ut-Tahrir wanted Egypt-like uprising in Pakistan

^^ You do understand that HuT doesn't believe in democracy or elections. Their stated goal is to setup some kind of trans-national khalifa w/o borders.

Btw, people who use religion to gain political power are no better than people who are running things now. At least, we don't have stonings or cutting people hands on city blocs every Friday.

Re: Hizb ut-Tahrir wanted Egypt-like uprising in Pakistan

I am aware of their crazy ideas. I am just hoping for a fluid situation Egypt like situation where the old guard is dislodged. Will the Brotherhood have a greater role in the post Mubarak Eygpt? Absolutely...The chaos is worth it.

Realistically speaking, we need a Justice and Development type party and Erdogan type leader -- someone who is mildly Islamist yet strongly tilted towards economic growth, can roll back the influence of the military. Of course that's unrealistic at this time.

Re: Hizb ut-Tahrir wanted Egypt-like uprising in Pakistan

I read their two pager newspaper which came with the Sunday newspaper.. its was all militant usual stuff with the bottom line that power should be transferred to their so-called khalifa by Pakistan army who would implement sharia** - idiots. **

Re: Hizb ut-Tahrir wanted Egypt-like uprising in Pakistan

I'm skeptical of anyone who wants to use religion to gain political power. Religion and politics should never be mixed, ever! Pakistan & Iran are 2 classic examples of what could happen when you mix the two. Iranians were for hopping for utopia when they put mullahs in power & now they regret it. Same thing happened in Pakistan under Zia & we are still paying for it.

Re: Hizb ut-Tahrir wanted Egypt-like uprising in Pakistan

I disagree, however I see your points. I think HYPOCRITES using religion to come into power should never happen. As I said earlier AK Party in Turkey has used its islamist basis to improve the country rather than using it to kill christians and other minorities. It is a tightrope no doubt. In most cases those who came to power using Islam as tool, were really looking for legitimacy to capture the throne.

Btw, I am not sure if Iranians are necessarily "regretting" putting mullahs in power. Sure they have had issues but I don't see an internal uprising or messy internal security situation. Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are better examples of religion being misused in the quest for power. I admit you make a strong argument, however a "third way" exists.

Re: Hizb ut-Tahrir wanted Egypt-like uprising in Pakistan

I am agreed with what Shamraz said, if they want they need to get it by demoratic way not by power or again in the name of Islam to use SOWRDS. And its clear that they are only few bunch of groups not having peoples power.

Re: Hizb ut-Tahrir wanted Egypt-like uprising in Pakistan

I doubt they would succeed in a large country like Pakistan. Maybe in a smaller predominant Muslim nation, they stand a better chance. I also find it ludicrous that that their base of operations is Londonistan and yet they insist on this caliphate in the Muslim lands.

Re: Hizb ut-Tahrir wanted Egypt-like uprising in Pakistan

^^ That is a good example of their hypocrisy. They are using freedoms afforded by non-Muslims countries to advance their religious-political goals in Muslim countries, and if they ever come to power, they'd deny those freedoms to others.

Re: Hizb ut-Tahrir wanted Egypt-like uprising in Pakistan

I agree with that assessment, but if they or any other group is capable of creating chaos, why not welcome it? I have strong doubt that HuT could come into power as a result. They have had failed coup attempts in the ME and subversion in Central Asia which was also clamped down. But if they or any group have the ability to spark revolution in Pakistan, it should be welcomed -- the reality is that Pakistan needs less corruption (and justice is a a major tenet of Islam), not necessarily a fundamentalist or mullah controlled government/political setup.

Zia ul Haq was nothing but a military dictator in the garb of a self described "momin."

Re: Hizb ut-Tahrir wanted Egypt-like uprising in Pakistan

Why all the foreign groups be it MB, HUT, Al-Qaeda, Hizbu-al-Tahreer, Uzbiks ...always just target Pakistan as the start of there world domination agendas? What so cool about Pakistan?

Re: Hizb ut-Tahrir wanted Egypt-like uprising in Pakistan

you are with zardari and his regime unbelievable! you are part of the problem not the solution!

Re: Hizb ut-Tahrir wanted Egypt-like uprising in Pakistan

^^ I'd take Zardari any day over Taliban.

Re: Hizb ut-Tahrir wanted Egypt-like uprising in Pakistan

Hizb ut-Tahrir ???? are they relevant?
