I work with HIV/AIDS patients in the states. I'd have to say that when a spouse leaves after finding out their partner is positive falls into one of 2 categories - they either didn't really love them to begin with or they just aren't good enough people to stick around for better or for worse - they abandon that person they love when they need them most. Says something about the character and selfishness of the person.
Very true, however the discussion is more geared to parental pressure for having children (or else they will get the guy another wife - I've seen this happen frequently btw) and fear of disclosure and the resulting "humiliation" for the parents... you see, our society really cares more about "what people are going to say"... peer pressure, norms and tradition, once again.
