History of Tolerance

History is full of intolerant events (raids, attacks, wars, etc). We barely find incidents which shows that there were people who remained tolerant irrespective of the fact that they got all chances to take revenge for suffering and kill the enemies.

One of such incident that always come to my mind is of the conquest of Makka by Prophet and companion. People of Makka had created troubles for the Prophet and his companion due to preaching of Islam. They were boycotted and had to pass some years in a separate area (Sho’ab Abi Talib). Traders were not allowed to sell goods to them even on inflated prices. Due to such treatment Muslims first migrated to Habsha (Ethopia) and then when people of Makka were planning for murder of the Prophet, he left his homeland. During the period between migration and conquest of Makka, people of Makka waged wars with Prophet and his companion.

Inspite of all this, when the Prophet entered Makka as a conqueror after ten years of his migration, he forgave people of Makka and didn’t take revenge, though he got the chance and it was norm of the day to take revenge.

Share such events (from any religion, part of the world) which conveyed tolerance.

Re: History of Tolerance

No idea of such things, as I don't think we even had options. History of cruelitiy is more than tolerance here:D

Re: History of Tolerance

But if we think over, we can find many.

What about the treatment of Porus by Alexandra, after he defeated him in battle?

Re: History of Tolerance

Was that tolerance or just one warrior acknowledging the respect due to another brave warrior who was his enemy?

Re: History of Tolerance

Yes it was acknowledgement of Porus's bravery, but what lead Alexandra acknowledging this was his tolerance IMO :)

Re: History of Tolerance

Or treatment to Raja Hemchandra by Akbar the great after second battle of Panipat:D

Re: History of Tolerance

What is the story? Please share :)

Re: History of Tolerance

Raja Hemchandra was executed by Akbar then under supervision of Bairam Khan:). I doubt if Hari Singh Nalwa ever pardoned anybody. Infact, I doubt if any of our kings were that tolerant:)

Re: History of Tolerance

This reminds me Halaku Khan's incident. Someone asked him what kindest act did you do in your life. He said once he was passing by a river and saw a woman crying for her baby fell in river. She requested to save her child by getting out of the river. Halakoo did so (got the baby out of water), but the baby was stick to his sword:(

Re: History of Tolerance

Countless examples of all Prophets’ acts of forgiveness and tolerance but you know what strikes me more is when the average human being displays a high tolerance. For example, I remember watching a documentary on Gary Ridgway, a serial killer/rapist. One part had me in tears - when the father of one of his victims forgave him - see for yourself:

Re: History of Tolerance

Thanks for sharing. It needs much courage to forgive such offences

Re: History of Tolerance

LP tolerating all of you is an example too :sid:

Re: History of Tolerance

Any comments about Salahudin Ayubi's treatment of Christian and Jews, after he conquered Jerusalem.

Re: History of Tolerance

I have no tolerance for sheddos.

Re: History of Tolerance

:hmmm: who is that sheddos?

Re: History of Tolerance

Indira Gandhi returning 90253 soldiers back:)

Re: History of Tolerance

That was not tolerance. Feeding 90253 soldiers was a burden that Nehru's daughter perceived very well. Bhutto also demanded for land knowing intelligent Indira would return soldiers soon :D

Re: History of Tolerance

She could used them instead of chammars and may be bonded labour easily:), rest is all reasoning, Bhutto never demanded, he requested:D

Re: History of Tolerance

Thats another discussion, whether India could keep these soldiers for long time against the international pressure. Indira was an iron lady full of political will and wisdom but lacking tolerance.
