Holmes number L31. Mahsudand Waziri tribesmen armed with Martini Henry rifles positioned at a fortified gun emplacement or sangar. TheMartini Henrys were used by Afghans in the Second AngloAfghan war as well and oftenwere decorated with pieces of engraved metal work. During the Third Anglo Afghan War the Waziri tribal lashkar made advances into British occupied Pashtun lands of the North West Frontier.

There are various explanations regarding the history of Attan. One version puts its roots in Zoroastrianism; as this dance was supposed to take the early Zoroastrians into a trance like state.
