Tyagi muslims are originally found in Haryana,Delhi and western UP, they are convert from Hindu Tyagi Brahmins:), even Allama Iqbal was descendent of Kashmiri Pandits:)
Re: History of Memon
But Allama Iqbal was not a Memon
If Miandad = Tyagi = Memon, can we say that all Memons are Brahmin.
Re: History of Memon
Allama was cousin of Sir Tej Bahadur Sapru, a kashmiri pandits, Memons are found in kutch to Maharshtra area, Tyagis are found in haryana and western UttarPradesh:)
Re: History of Memon
Yes I remember reading about Sapru in Javed Iqbal's biography of Iqbal. So Brahmin are creative / intelligent like Jews. It is believed that Jews are so intelligent because their forefathers ate 'Man o Salwa' a heavenly food sent to the the Bani Israel (Jews) at the time of Prophet Moses (AS).

In Hindu scriptures Brahma the creator, created the Brahmand, Universe and representative of Brhma and his knowledge in Brhamand is Brahmin:), there duty was to educated and live in Ashram, they used to teach about scriptures and weapon-strategic things to Kshtriya who were trained to fight and protect, Brahmins also used to fight sometimes but were not allowed to accumulate wealth.
the regular interaction with knowledge made them knowledgeable and intelligent, in modern India they have to fight in unreserved seat hence their competitiveness increased further
Re: History of Memon
But what is the reason behind Memons intelligence.. They are usually rich and involve in trading.

I guess because they originate from the region of Sindhis, Gujratis and Marwadis, all these communities are mostly Baniyas and by default very good bussiness people:)
Re: History of Memon
Now whats the story behind this term baniya.. We've been hearing this term 'Hindu Baniya' since childhood and I thought that every Hindu related to business is called Baniya. In Sindh, Hindus are generally called 'Vaaniya' referring to their attachment with business.. This Vaaniya is derived from Sindhi term 'Vanj Wapaar' - for Business / Trading

Hindus are classified in four classes, Brahmin,Kshtriya, Vaishyas and shudras, Vaishyas were bussiness people the colloquial term for vaishyas is baniya:) Sanskrit term for bussiness is vanijya-vyapaar:), you got it right according to caste lines but now these lines have got blurred as many non-vaishyas/Baniyas are in bussiness:)
Re: History of Memon
So Memon are probably converted vaishyas = Baniya.
Re: History of Memon
Memons are an ethnic (linguistics) group that originated from lower Sindh near the Indus delta region. They are well respected Muslim Entrepreneurs, Philanthropist and Humanitarian in the Indian subcontinent and elsewhere. Memon are, generally, well known for being honest, hardworking and innovative that contributed greatly to their commercial success.
**
Story behind word Memon**
There are two unsubstantiated theories, according to Sayad Amir-ud-din Nuzhat (1873) - In early 15th century A.D near Nagar-Thatta, during the rule of Markab Khan of Samma dynasty (A.D. 1351-1521), several Hindu families accepted Islam from a well respected Sufi Sheikh who had given this tribe a new name Mu’amin and overtime the name tainted to Memon. If this theory is accepted, then the Memons were originally Hindu. Second theory is that according to Karimbaksh Khalid is that Certain soldiers of Arab tribe of Banu Tamim, of Qatif, near Ta’if, came to Sindh along with Muhammad bin Qasim, they were known as Maymenah, right-wingers in the army , and later this word was corrupted to Memons. If this theory is accepted, then the Memons were originally Arabs.
**
Demography**
Prior to the Partition of India most Memons lived in Kutch and Khatiwar. Those who settled in Kutch were called Kutchi Memon / Cutchi, and those who settled in Kathiawar were called Kathiawadi Memons and those who remained in Sindh were called Sindhi Memon. Memons further distinguished themselves to a town where their forefathers last settled in India. Example Banatva Memonn Kutiyana Memon. Many Memons also settled in major Indian cities such as Ahmedabad, Surat, Bombay, Calcutta, Cochin, Madras, Colombo etc.
After Partition of India Many later settled in Pakistan. Today, they are scattered throughout India and Pakistan, with significant communities in the United Kingdom, Canada, USA, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, UAE, and South Africa and Burma. There are no definite population figure and it is estimated that, it is over one million (2005) for Khatiwari Memon alone. This are no estimate available for Kutchi and Sindhi Memons

In fact this entire region of Marwad,Gujarat is not represented in Armed forces,So maximum connections I have are from Defense background, and this community is not there unlike other muslim communities:)
Re: History of Memon
This again proves peaceful nature of the community :D
Here in Karachi, it is famous that Memons sometimes call them from Sindhi origin and sometimes call them migrants, considering the political situation of the city :)
But most of the researchers are of the view that Memons are originally Lohanas from Sindh and their language 'Memoni' also proves the same, which is very much identical to Sindhi. Even in my office, I call Sindhi Memons and Kathiawari Memons 'colonial cousins'.
