historical shows

I am in mourning, not because something happened, but something happened centuries ago which I have read about many times and even seen visualized in movies and shows but I saw one that moved me..I am talking about Spartacus … I forgot for a bit that the end would be ..the end but I understood his struggle, the choices, the challenges and the unfairness of things and lessons for us.

So… Should there be another movie about the prophet other than the message. What about the caliphs? Or imam Hussain?

I saw the lion of the dessert ages ago and was moved, it was about Libyan independence from Italy.

What say you, yes..no.. Why, why not.. Conditions required to do justice to it, etc.

Re: historical shows

Yes..

I liked Spartacus.. and the Tudors.. and the Borgias.. and Rome..

Also Magnificent Century.. based on the story of Suleiman the Magnificent (in Turkish but with subs)

Re: historical shows

I still haven’t seen Lost, Walking dead, True blood, Game of thrones, and all of the brainwashing idiotic shows. Read a book people!

Re: historical shows

Yes..i like historical shows..very fond of the actually. Especially medieval stuff. I watched Spartacus Blood and Sand..all three seasons. Great stuff i tell you!..

McPendo… Books are great, but visual narration has a whole different impact.

Xtron, yep that’s the one. Saw the three seasons during flights and train rides in a week

Re: historical shows

There will be no audience for it in the West or do you forget the controversy surrounding Kingdom of Heaven?

Re: historical shows

Historical movies for the most part are as good as sleep-aid…just like Pirate of Caribbean and Harry potter, Three Musketeers type movies.

And then the makeup, situations, costumes/long dresses for both men and women and fake British accent. Such a headache.

Books/written material cannot be replaced by movies.

Zafra, why just focus on the west?

Diwana

While historical movies have not been blockbusters. They have been well received.

Forget Hollywood, make it in Pakistan, don’t need British accents, fake or otherwise. We can have Mohammad bin qasim speak in punjabi accent for all I care.

Movies can’t replace books and books can’t replace movies.

PS: books are useless unless you can read. Not an area some places are doing very well at.

Anyone here see a PTV show “Aakhri Chataan” was on in early 80s. I have seen a few episodes and trying to get my hands on the full series. Came highly recommended by my uncle.

Re: historical shows

I’ve also heard about Aakhri Chataan…what’s the story line…?

It’s about Samarkand, khwarzam, Bokhara etc … Before they were over run by the mongols. Khwarzam was the last stronghold.

Re: historical shows

Nice.

Re: historical shows

X2, welcome to loonylan, in a good way. living in past so vividly :hugz:

Agree with McPaindo, reading book is honest. Watching TV not so much.

Why is it not honest? Could a book not be as biased or leading as a TV show or a movie? Both are only as good as the creators of the work. Or is it about depiction of the book. I mean I understand the whole argument of a book not being translated well in a visual medium, and limitations of the visualization of a few people compared to imagination of many readers.

Is there room for only one medium though? Does it have to be mutually exclusive?

Re: historical shows

I should write more lines.

What mean is, a person going out to library to get a book, a person who goes…drive..to buy a book.
As oppose to some one eating pop corn and accidentally pushing a button to find some thing on TV.

An approach to learn trough book is more honest.
You would rarely see some one bashing pakistan or islam after reading a book.
Often people who go buy book to learn about such thing have either favourable attitude towards us, or less hostile.
But yes TV is being there all the time, its no harm using it for education and stuff.

Monk, why are you limiting the use if this for non Muslims or no Pakistanis? As far as people reading books go, the books vary quite significantly. What movie exactly do some non Muslims base their thinking of Mohammad bin qasim on? Or the caliphs? What did they in 1800s?

Let’s come to more recent times..Would a movie on Aziz Bhatti not be of value? How about allama Iqbal, maulana Jauhar… MM Alam?
Why not make a movie about our only Nobel Prize winner? Or dr abdul khadri khan if so inclined? …what about even about independence …or 1971?

It can be used as education, it can be used as propaganda…I realize that.

We have dramas, movies and what nots, what about real documentaries..and then.. What about historical depictions…even for ppl within Pakistan.

Re: historical shows

^ The one ever so obvious and monumentally correct point he makes in his post, “You would rarely see some one bashing Pakistan or Islam after reading a book.”

Re: historical shows

ok..

All your point are very valid and ture.
Base of my post was response to your suggestion of movie about prophet.

Other then that, yes if some one accidentally(changing channel, looking at what is on, looking at program guide) and find a movie about aziz bhati. or muhamad bin qasim, that would a very positive thing.

You can sum some ones life up in few hour movie.
I know my non muslim non pakistani friends, have positive impact after they saw “khuda ky liey” “bol” “mili ali ko mili”

Yes such movies are an easy and quick way of clearing, negative propaganda from people’s mind.

But as far phophet’s life go, NO.
His time perhaps.

But again, a person who have read a book, usually have deep thought about one two or very few issues.

Person watching Tv would have extremely shallow/visual thought about half a million things. Its hard to talk to such people.
dude… books win hands down. in your hands or in opponents hand
