I dont know of any other countries that have both the national song & national anthem, so tough to give generic differences. However "Vande Mataram" has officially been recognized as India's national song and is played at important events like after every session of parliament. To me that means a song that deserves some respect. There are laws against hunting the national bird & national animal, so why be so wishy washy about the national song ?
Not singing the national song by itself may look like a small thing, but it signals something greater i.e. separatist and unpatriotic mentality of a few people.

Why pushing everyone to Hindu’ise the coutry? If you already have a national anthem then why push to sing a song when there is resistance? Just stick to the national athem? Unless national anthem is not valued anymore. Remember, pushing a useless entity like song down everyone’s throat (esp when you already have a national anthem) is only going to crack the foundations of your country. As a Pakistani I can really welcome such moves because its almost certain that it will flame the anti-nationalism/anti-India feelings if you can’t accomodate the feelings of a sizeable population. A few more moves like this will only cause the volcano to erupt then later don’t come out crying like George Bush i.e. why they hate us. Please go on and push the song down everyone’s throat :k:

vande matharam was very popular in Bangal during the bangal partition in 1905 and because of its popularity Rabindranatha Tagore tuned it. It spread and became a symbol of indian freedom struggle.
The national anthem was choosen to accomodate the muslims while for the most part vande matharam was the front runner. If Hindus can accomodate muslims why not for a single day(centenary celebration) muslims can be accomodating. Even if they feel that its going against their religion they could have just abstained, why issue fatwas. It just show rigidity in muslim belief. and gives a very bad advertisement of their coexistance.

Brother believe me there is nothing like pushing anything down the throat of anyone who dont want to swallow it, it is only rhetoric created by two cousin brothers in India, ie RSS and THEIR FUNDAMENTALIST ISLAMIC COUNTERPARTS. Believe me, being active in politics, I have reasons to believe that both are not so strange bed fellows. They are always hand in gloves with each others coz existance of anyone is solely dependent on another one.
September 7Th, the day when everyone was requested to sing the national song has passed away with no indecent incident, some muslims sang the song, most of them stayed away from it, even our PM stayed away from function where he was supposed to sing the song. Now whats left??? just chill and keep ur pure advices, like not come crying like bush, buried in Pakistani madarsas, its time to think something worthwhile.

This thread is a great example of why every nation ruled Hindoos in the past.. Most notable Muslims for about 1000 years (which they have not forgotten till today)
These hindoos will beat your a s s off till you accept what they are telling you. They will spend hours and months and years to turn others to believe what they believe.
How much time they waste in these "manners". Thats the reason why they think cow urine and everything that comes out of its rear end is "holy" while humans have conquered the other planets of this universe. Even in the 23rd century, these people will be thinking cow is god.............
Next time, I think all Muslim members of the forum MUST serve the Hindoo members "Puchagavya" after making any thread about India or Hindooism...... :)

Its funny & typical how you have side stepped my question and launched into this “holier than thou” diatribe. When we have laws to protect the national bird, animal & flag, why not the National song ? Why we have a national anthem as well as a national song is a choice the Govt. of India made years ago. As an Indian, I feel that national symbols deserve to be respected. It was only idiots like Bukhari & the Deoband mullahs who were against respecting the national song. Most other IMs did not have an issue with the song.
As one of the later posters has said, 9/7 has come & gone without incident. So I don’t want to flog this issue to death and will just leave it at that.
