well…we all know that how important it is for a woman to cover herself…but my question is: what basically the HIJAB is? I mean is it covering of face or just hairs??? I am kinda confused about it..some people believe that its not important to take naqab…and if you just cover your hairs they say that its not sharai pardah…then what is pardah??

Let us talk about pardah in general, as Hijab is a piece of clothing for the head.

The rulings are quite simple actually.

  1. One should wear clothing that hides the female curves and figure.
  2. Only face and hands are permissable to be shown.
  3. It is emphasized that women should cover their bosom in an appropriate manner.

Purdah is not only clothing, but also behaviour in society and other. But that would be a bit irrelevant to your question.

so is it wrong if someone is covering her face? what is naqab then? coz I myself read somewhere that it is also very important..plus in my family most of the girls take veil for this purpose!

It is not wrong to cover yuor face that is like the best stage of pardah..because face is attractive pat of the body too.
Hijab is mostly reffered to the head covering.I also think that it is wrong to only cover your hair...there are other parts of the body that reqiure covering. It is not important to take the niqab...but if a girl has make-up on i think she should. And it is not right to force someone to do pardah.

as far as my knowledge stretches, I think that the sharia dont say that covering the face is compulsory.

here is an ayah from Quran regarding hijab:

and to draw their veils all over Juyubihinna (i.e. their bodies, faces, necks and bosoms, etc.) and not to reveal their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husband's fathers, their sons, their husband's sons, their brothers or their brother's sons, or their sister's sons, or their (Muslim) women (i.e. their sisters in Islâm), or the (female) slaves whom their right hands possess, or old male servants who lack vigour, or small children

There are MANY translations to the quran. (Im sure you know that). This one has face involved, while others have only teh head and the bossoms.

I think the basic rule of thought here is that a woman should cover herself enough so that a non-mehram’s ‘nigah’ cannot catch her attractivness.

You could expand on that if you wish.

Also, covering of the face is not fardh. It is a sunnah.

actually.. its different imam’s interpretations that differ regarding the covering of the face (all ) or only allowing the eyes to show.

there’s an imam, i dont remember the name, but he said that for pardah the woman is allowed only to see w/1 eye (show 1 eye).

some pple say covering thee face is mandatory, some pple say its not. personally i think taht hijab comes from within and manifests itself outward. if u wear whatever kind of hijab. at least u are wearing it. and those that are blessed by Allah swa to wear hijab should not look down at others who dont wear it. u dont know who u may be influencing in taking their first steps towards hijab

Thank you very much everyone for the replies! so the bottom line is: if you are covering your hairs then this is hijab right? but as boley heard its not necessary for an old woman to take naqab and thats what I heard, so why people have different concepts? maybe because of FIQA's if one is followong HANFI then hijab is not only covering your hairs but you have to cover you face as well and if one is following shafai then covering hairs is HIJAB, am I right? thats what I know and heard as well!

Hope the following helps - (I have extracted this from the Alim CD).

In one tradition, the
Prophet Muhammad is
quoted as saying: "...If the
woman reaches the age of
puberty, no part of her
body should be seen but
this --- and he pointed to
his face and hands."

From these and other
references, the vast
majority of Muslim scholars
and jurists, past and
present, have determined
the minimum requirements
for Muslim women's dress:
1) Clothing must cover the
entire body, with the
exception of the face and
the hands. 2) The attire
should not be form fitting,
sheer or so eye-catching
as to attract undue
attention or reveal the
shape of the body.

From the above I understand that Hijab is not just the head covering but a total dress code.

hmm Nargis jii, what i mean is that some Somalian girls in my school start to wear Hijab in the beginning of HS and as they get useto the students they start to wrap it around only the hair and wear those humongous(sp?) earings and shout in the hall ways…puts me down

to those who think niqab is not important, here is the reference I got from Quran:

O Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks (veils) all over their bodies (i.e.screen themselves completely except the eyes or one eye to see the way). That will be better, that they should be known (as free respectable women) so as not to be annoyed. And Allâh is Ever Oft­Forgiving, Most Merciful.*
(Al-Ahzab, Ayat 59)

as we can see that how clearly it is mentioned here in this Ayat that all of your body should be covered! and this means that covering of face is as important as hairs plus hands and feet should be covered as well!

i think ke Hijaab siraf pardah kar lene se Hijaab nahi ho jata ....
pardah dil mai hona chahye...
agar ek ladki ne apne jisam ko achi tarah dhanka hua hai our hairs bhi, par wo dil se saaf na ho uss pardeh ka kya faida ....

niqaab is best stage of pardah ...........
but siraf niqaab kar lene se pardah nahi ho jata .....

mai to yehi samajhti hun ke apne jisam ko achi tarah dhankna chahye our sarr pe dupatta ho yehi bohat hai ....
saruri nahi hai ke face ko bhi cover kiya jae but agar mai full make-up mai bahir jaun to i think i have to cover my face to....

cuz aankhen to aap dhank nahi sakte
jisam sarr face ko jahnk ke bhi agar aapki nazar idhir udhar bathke to faida kya parde ka
issi tarah mardon ke lye kaha gaya hai ke wo apni nazren nichi rakhen...
ghair iradhi tor pe kissi pe nazar pare uska kuch nahi par agar uske baad koi dubara kissi ladki ki taraf nazar uthae to wo gunnah mai shumaar hai
