I wonder to what extent 'high society' is basically a term used to 'new money' or nouveau riche class?
I know what kind of people are considered 'high society' in Pakistan, and frankly speaking, I wish I never knew them nor I have any desire to know them any further. I rather wander alone in a park or chase ducks and chickens then sit in their company.

I rather agree with Jolie. I think the term "high society" is primarily used by the new money, or nouveau riche. I don't think the established "old money," describe themselves as "high society." In fact, I've noticed that "old money" type individuals don't talk about money or class at all as it is considered crass or vulgar.

From what I have observed, 'high society' women and men are those filthy rich, mostly in some sort of business. And yes, sad to say that most of them are highly westernized. Westernized here means they dress indecently (according to my standards) and are open to consuming non halal food and drinks.
(no offense to any one but this is what I have observed in the city I live in)

so royal families of countries like KSA or UK are elite class? But the culture of elite families from both these areas differ. right? So culturally, High class / elite class is not same term.

I think the concept is not universal, as factors to assign someone from ;high class' varies from culture to culture. Wealth may be a most important factor, but in some cultures, just being wealthy doesn't put a person on high status.

I think there is quite a difference between the elite class and aristocracy and royal families of the UK or KSA fall into the latter category.
