On a serious note, we know smoking is hazardous to health but does that stop people from smoking cigs?
In the same way, heels might be bad for posture and might cause pain but they’re just a fashion accessory for girls and they’re used to wearing them. A model might have fallen over because of heels but millions of other women go to work in heels and stay fine all day long.
and how do you know this is the only reason why women wear high heels!
Women like to feel good about themselves too, you know!

When it comes to makeup and designer clothes and bags, they're doing it to please other women more then to please men. It's part of our consumerist culture.

The points I mentioned might be health related, but the topic itself is not. It's about women going as far as "getting used" to physical pain in order to be accepted by other people. I would like to get more input from women about their POV. I'd like to know what other reasons there might be, except those which were already mentioned in this thread.

You're right, these things increase "competition based on looks" between women and it's not good thing. It is all very superficial, some women can wear designer clothes, shoes etc and can afford to have beauty treatments and plastic surgeries while others can't but are expected to by society. It leads women to spend more and more money on these things to make them feel good and increase their social status. If you ask high-end prostitutes and escorts etc why they do what they do, they'll say because it gives them financial freedom so they can "afford all the designer clothes/bags they want".
