Joined the gym the other day, and was using one of the cardio machines today and was shocked when my heart rate was showing as 170bpm. Any tips as to how i can change my diet to reduce this?
Re: High Heart Rate
It usually goes down after you get in better shape. You are doing the right thing.
Keep doing cardio.
Re: High Heart Rate
may be tha heart rate monitor was malfunctioning. 170 is not good. if i wud ever get to 170 my heart wud explode
Avoid salt. Avoiding stress will lower your heart rate. If your heart rate is above 100 you need to see a doctor, maybe you need medication. If you are taking other medication it might have a side effect of high blood pressure that can increase the heart rate. Best is to consult a doctor.
Exercise to improve your overall physical fitness and your heart rate will drop.
Re: High Heart Rate
When I used to do stairs, 2 steps at a time. I have recorded mine at over 212 per min.
I did not die.
She was working out when It went up to 170, seeing doc wont hurt. But no need to get scared.
Re: High Heart Rate
Leave the gym... your heart will be just fine.

no no not like that,
We had 3 story house in pak. So I use to do stairs 2 at a time(hopping) for 20 some thing mins(25-laps)
When I am done If check my pulse it would be well over 200/min.
But guess what, after few Weeks of that training I want running for 6 km, I was done running with out even sweating and so calm that I was repeating newly learned economics figures in my head.

hmm I was winter in pak. Mostly “no sweat” was just an expression. ![]()
Re: High Heart Rate
Thanks everyone, especially PM.
The reason I was worried because the exercise I was doing was not very strenuous, and I wouldn't have thought there was anything wrong with me if it wasn't for the machine continuously warning me that HR was high.
I'm not going to go to the doctor's just yet, as I don't have any other signs of illness or ailments. As I am hoping the reason was just my general unfitness and therefore will just continue going to the gym and get fit, which I hope will reduce my heart rate.
Will report back with any changes.
Re: High Heart Rate
good.
Re: High Heart Rate
I thought I'd report back that after a week of going to the gym, my heart rate is now down to average of 148 bpm. I am happy that it has gone down, and the machine is no longer saying that my heart rate is so high that it can not give a reading, however my friend keeps saying this is dangerous and I probably have some other underlying problems for which I should go and see the Dr. I hate going to the Dr's at the worst of times, and I'd rather keep exercising for a further couple of weeks and hopefully bring my HR down this way each week.
Should I go to the Dr's? or stick to the exercise?
P.S. What should my heart rate be when I'm working out?
Re: High Heart Rate
Mine is little under 60 b/m now. Just woke u and move around a little.
Next time I do stairs I will take reading and post.
I however know in pak boxing team dudes had heart rate lower the 50 pulse a min when relaxing.
When you keep working-out, your blood distribution/circulation system improves and as a result your heart has to pump less times.

As you know heart is a pump.
When it beats it pumps blood at a specified amount.
When someone exercises, heart rate goes up to provide extra demand by the body.
With time if exercise is on regular basis, heart pumping action is increased and also body requirement of circulating blood becomes less as body becomes used to extract more oxygen from relatively lesser amount of blood. (Adaptation).
End result, less heart rate with time.
Also nerve system or heart (Vegas nerve) is more active in athletes and at rest or during sleep, their heart rate is slower.
Nothing to worry about. If no chest pain or extra fatigued, keep exercising. You might want to hire a trainer at least for a short time.
Re: High Heart Rate
Actually, I think that's pretty normal?
Actually, I think that's pretty normal?
Yes, for most people. Especially if they are beginners or work out too much in the beginning.
Re: High Heart Rate
Weekly update: I am glad to report that my heart rate is now down to an average of 132-138 bpm this week. No longer showing danger on the cardio machines.
This has shown that even those who look healthy and have no ailments, should still do regular exercise because appearances can be deceiving.
I will keep reporting back here, hopefully with positive results.
Re: High Heart Rate
As a sprinter one has to go beyond and train in the anaerobic heart rate zone, which is about 175-190 ONLY if one is very fit and taking his/her sport very seriously. Basically you end up increasing your speed by doing this as you bolster speed muscle twitch. However, your body is deprived of oxygen and produces toxins, namely lactic acid in a jiffy so you have to watch out and keep it short.
Since you are a beginner with a primary weight loss goal, stay out of this heart rate zone! You should be way up in the 130s because you are improving your working to train and condition your metabolism to burn fat more efficiently and rapidly.
Re: High Heart Rate
Thanks for bring the thread up again.
Sweet I did take readings.
I did 10mins of stairs normal
7 mins 2 steps at a time.
after 17 mins my heart rate was 204 p/s. I had a tea and some junk just before that work out session.
After relaxing for few mins(2-3) it went down to under 96 p/s
right now(at work) its well under 60.
